BIBLE LESSON Family Provides Home For Jesus H. RAMSEY it Slay og well to preface today's lesson with a summary|as: Of its subjects and their place t the life of Jesus. Mary, Martha and Lazarus, common: so gg ie a for three unusual They: were all oumetried "aad lived r quite comfortably. 'en were a family of éome importance is evidenced by the great numbers of prom- nent ag ong came to com- fort the sisers upon the death of Lazarus (John 11 11:19, 31). One may also surmise that they were fairly well-to-do from the cost of Mary's ointment of- (John 12:1-5), and Mar- tha's housewifely ""husyness" indicates she is the official hostess in the household. This, then, is the family that led Jesus with a home img, home during His later Jerusalem ministry. The home in Nazareth with Mary, His mother. But He was always welcomed in the home of Mary, Martha and Lazaraus, . On the day in question, ac- cording to Luke, Jesus stopped at their home in Bethany, some three miles from Jerusalem. As he sat talking, Mary, the thinker and dreamer, sat at His feet, listening and questioning. Suddenly Martha appears from the kitchen. She is hot, tired, red of face from standing over the stove preparing the tha, exasperated with the seem- shiftlessness of her sister, s Jesus to bid Mary return to the kitchen and help her with the meal. Martha complains. of having no one to help her, but it is by her own choice that she has so much to do, She enjoys her rep- utation as Bethany's busiest, most perfect housewife. And so}, she swept, scrubbed, dusted, washed, ironed, cooked, baked, roasted and basted, expending her energies maintaining thi reputation. And she resented any women --particularly her sister--who, contrary to the times, wanted to think, listen and discuss the more profound matters which men had, until then, appropri- ated for themselves. Thus we see that Jesus' re- buke was not intended to dis- parage the virtue of gofd house- wifery, but to show that one can become so preoccupied with it that one has no time for lis- tening to the words of Christ or benefitting by the spiritual blessings of His presence. In John 11:1-54 we find an almost minute-by-minute study of.the miracle of raising Laz- arus from the dead. Jesus is preaching on the far side of the! Jordan when He receives word of Lazarus' illness. He takes the news almost casually, lingering Lazarus is dead and, on their arrival in Bethany, they find he has lain in the tomb four days already. \ Jesus assures Martha that ing this statement with another, ful and assured statements, He ever uttered (vs. 25). Mary is sent for and, together with the mourners, they go to the tomb where Lazarus is interred. The stone is rolled away from the sepulchre and, after giving thanks to God, Jesus bids Laz- arus to come forth. This raising of Lazarus gal- vanizes the chief priests and Pharisees into action (Jona 11:55-12:11), From tliat day on they plot how Jesus should be taken and put to death, even going so far as to consider put- ting Lazarus to death also. For these reasons, Jesus was not ex- pected in Jerusalem for the coming Passover. Yet, six days before the feast, He appears he home of Laz- arus and dines"With the family. Lazarus will rise again, follow-| one of the most glorious, hope-|ing in At the dinner Mary takes a box of expensive ointment, which she has been saving for the time of His death, and anoints His feet. When Judas objects, Jesus silences him (vs. 7 and 8). Mary knew what she was do- anointing Him in antici- pation of His burial, for a week later the Saviour was crucified. Golden Text: "She saith unto' him, Yea, Lord; I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world."--John 11:27. But if we can't find the answer, let us not worry about it. Let us accept in faith that God is good and that the experience can teach us some valuable lessons, When Jacob was presented with Joseph's bloody coat, he refused to be comforted and said, "I will go down into the ve unto my son mourning." ears later when the nine sons feturned from Egypt with grain but without Simeon, Jacob ex- claimed, "Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away: all these things are against me." Jacob was wrong. God was working for him and his family. Soon he would embrace. Joseph and all his family would be in Egypt with abundance during the remaining years of famine. Job in his loss, bereavement, and affliction, is the great ex- ample of patience. His friends the cause and came up with the wrong answer. Job maintained his faith. In the end he prayed for these sefl-appoint- turned in his favor. One of my students entering| the pastoral ministry, later married a young lady he had met during his training. A baby girl was born to them but lived for only a few days, There continued a question mark in God take their baby? Twelve years later his wife was in the hospital during a prolonged illness.
