hi @ © THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesday, February 25, 1964 BEATLES GET LOOK AT LISTON VICTIM The 'Beatles Arrive To Help Cassius Jive By The Associated Press The Beatles, the mop-haired British rock "'n roll quartet, visited the training quarters of fellow ntortainer Cassius Clay recently but the atmosphere was no more zany than usual. A few bored fight characters glanced up briefly when the Beatles walked into the shabby Fifth Street Gym and a handful ef paying customers, who had conte to see "The Greatest" work out, showed passing inter- est. The only real excitement was displa, ed by a mob of U.S. and British photographers and three small girls who got into the place somehow" and squealed dutifully. "Where's Cassius?" the Beatles chorused when they walked in. Told that he had not arrived, George Harrison of the Beatles said, "Wel, let's go then." **Where's the Beatles?" asked Cassius when he strolled in 10 minutes later, one half-hour be- hind: schedule. Clay was taken into a dress- ing room where the Beatles had fled to escape the heat and the .Mop-Toppers' Have Three In Top Ten Well, the mop-headed four} gym fro. over 'ome still have three records in this week's top ten. It seems that before long they will have ove -rvn the natives. Of course the United States' answer to "he Beatles (hard to tell the difference), The Trash- nme-, have their rendition of the *Surfir' Bird' standing at num- ber four. The Rivieras, a group that came from nowhere in a couple o° weeks has their "California Sun"? at number three. Ja and Dean have a new song, Don't kno wif it has been released as a single but it is on one of their L-P's, It is about a Drag Race between an E-type Jag and a Sting Ray. Of course the Sting Ray wins the race by fcrcing the E type off the road at a place called Dead Man's curve. : : The Beach Boys are also com- ing out with a lot of Hot rod songs now. Their latest is about a swinging chick out in Cali- fornia (where else) who borrows her "ad's T-Bird and heads the local boys a merry chase, and she'E have fun-fun-fun-until her daddy takes the T-Bird away. So it looks like Surfin' Songs have gone the way of the Ele- phants and You types with the fast blown machines coming in. ;crowding photographers. When they came out a few minutes later, Clay said he was so pleased about the visit that he wou.d compose a poem on the spot: "When Sonny Liston picks up the papers and sees 'That the Beatles came to see me, ; "He will bec»me so angry that, "I will knock him out in three."' Clay and the small, slightly built Beatles climbed into the ring and chatted for a while, but the conversation was drown- ed out by Willie Pastrano, the light - heavyweight cham- pion, who was pounding the light bag near by, To please the photographers, the Beatles lay down on their backs and Clay stood over them, bes'ting on his chest ad holding up a badge which said: "Help Stamp Out The Beatles"'. The Beatles were asked who they favored in the Feb>25 fight between Clay and Liston. Their replies were: TAE BEATLES PREDICT John Lennon: "Louie Arm- strong."" When novody laughed a tthat, he added, "No one more than the other."' Ringo Starr: "What do you say? I don't want to get out of here with a broken nose." George Harrison: 'I don't know and I don't care, really."' Paul McCartney: "Don't ask me that until I get out of th After the clowning in the ring, the Beatles left without seeing C'.y's orkout. On the sidewalk outside, the three little girls who had provided the only squeals, an' a few passers-by, saw them make a quiet get-away. Guidé and Scout movement, throughout the world, in commemoration of Lord Baden-Powell's birthday, try a little bit harder to keep thcir Promise and to promote the founding idea of world friendship and brotherhood. This past week has been desig- nated Scouting Week and if you noticed, Eaton's again this year generously donated window space for a-Rover-Ranger dis- play, Since this is the highlight of the Guiding and Scouting year, it stands to reason of course, that we attend Church. For our crew, this was last Sunday, It was our povieet and I say that sincerely, to at- tend the evening church service at the invitation of the Guides and Scouts of St. George's Memorial Anglican Church. Sit- ting there, listening to the ser- mon, so appropriate in its text, so intelligent in its delivery, ob- serving how clean and pure and fresh these young people looked from Cubs and Brownies up to the leaders themselves, you could not help but feel a pride in such a Movement and espe- cially in being a part of it. It's a long year that stretches between this day but for an oc- casion like this you can forget all its hardships. B-P put a lot into the meaning of Scouting, and I truly feel that it is occa- sions like this that keep that meaning there. A sincere thank you to our compatriots in this great Movement and especially to Chuck Collard for allowing us to share this experience with them. - And now with the regular news. An old friend of the crew, Lorraine Dean is ill and taking up space in the hospital, so they say. All of us, espectally the | 'old gals', wish her a speedy recovery. APPLIES FOR CONFERENCE Something of real interest has come' up to stir our imagina- tions. Our Chief Petty Officer, Sharon Hester, has been select- ed to apply for a World Con- ference on Guiding to be held in India. There will be a lot of applications go in from all over Canada for this, and we're just . crossing our fingers that she is one of the lucky ones, Best of luck Sharon! And now 2 word of warning. .
