THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesdey, November 19, 1963 MRS. MARGARET McNEILL DIRECT GIRLS' PROGRAM AT SIMCOE HALL MISS SALLY PARKER MRS. DORIS NASH MRS. E. TAYLOR MRS. DORIS COLE 1959 Survey Stressed Need For Simcoe Hall Expansion A survey instigated in 1959 by the Women's Welfare League and Boys' Clubs of Canada first revealed the need for the en- targement of Simcoe Hall Setthe- ment House to include club ac- tivity rooms, a regulation size basketball gym and an indoor swimming pool. An Organizing and Financing Committee was set up by a small group of Osh- awa business men. Later, Harc'd McNeill, direc- tor of Simcoe Hail, announced that ideas for a new building were under discussion, and in April, 1962 fir=1 plans were dis- closed by. Sterart Alger, a member of the committee and of the. National Executive of Boys' Clubs of Canada. The building was to be sim- ilar to Toronto Dovercourt Boys' Club. It would include. the de- sired club rooms, basketball - gymn and borge swimming pool. PRIVATE SUBSCRIPTION After considerable. investiga- tion by the Women's Welfare League, it was decided the best location would be the north-west comer of Eastview Park, bounded by Eulalie avenue on the novth and Central Park boulevard on the west. In this area, it seemed, the club would do the most good as, within one mile of the location, were 15 schools with over 7,000 students, the largest group of boys and girls in Oshawa. Also in the area was a great great number of volunteer workers, whose help would ease the new club's bud- get. Oshawa 1961 City Council fol- lowed through in the survey and backed this new community $50,000 and set aside the site selected, Eastview Park. © tect, Herbert G. Cole, and con- sulting architects Pentland and Designers were Oshawa archi- Baker, Toronto. The estimated cost of the new building was $400,000. All the money for the project was to be raised by pri- vate subscription. Contributions were welcomed from all Oshawa citizens and organizations who wished to share in building the new club. There was a-rapid and generous 1>sponse to this appeal, and by June 1962 Mr. Grant Coates, cor- responding secretary for the campaign, was able to send out a letter saying that architects' sketch plans had been approved, working plans were being pre- pared-and already $272,610 had been contributed. The Greater Oshawa Community Chest and the City of Oshawa each prom- ised $15,000 a year for the an- nual operating expenses of $30,- youth project with a grant of | 99 BUILDING STARTED At the end of November, the turf rather frozen at that time of year, Col. R. S. McLaughlin publicly "turned the sod" at WE EXTEND OUR SINCERE to the SIMCOE HALL BOYS' CLUB Eastview Park, and the project was ready to move into its final stage, the actual construction of the building. Taking part in the program with Col. McLaugh'in were Mayor Christine Thomas, Rt. Rev. Philip Coffey, DF, of Holy Oross Roman Catholic Church, and Rev. W. A, McMil- lan, Secretary of Oshawa Minis- terial Association. AM of these people thad given considerable encouragement from the start. In December, Stewart Alger and W. B. Bennett announced that a general contract had been awarded to H. 7". Brooks Lid., at their bid of $346,327. By this time contributions pledged or already in the treasury had ex- ceeded $300,000. As of Nov. 13 t's year the total stands at $371,621. Building was started as soon as the contract was awarded and since then has come along at a good speed. It should be completed by opening day.
