Triple Crown Winner Named Horse Of Year TORONTO (CP) -- Canebora, the second horse to win Can- ada's triple crown of racing, has been unanimously selected as Canada's horse of the year. A temperamental colt which dislikes the bugle call to the races, Canebora was chosen by 17 turf writers, sports editors and handicappers. Results of the 13th annual vote, announced Friday by The Daily Racing Form, marked the sixth victory for thoroughbreds from E, P. Taylor's Windfieid's Farm. Canebora triumphed in the Queen's Plate, the Prince of Wales' Stakes and Breeders' Stakes. Proof of his versatility was' that all three races were under different conditions. Setting a Canadian record, Canebora became the first Do minion-foaled to win more than $100,000 in one season, racing exclusively on Canadian tracks. STARTED 10 TIMES Canebora started 10 times this season, winning, one other race besides his triple crown victor- Roughies Hopped ies. His earnings totalled $100,- 194. Only one other horse has won the so-called triple crown since it was designated as such in 1959. That vear, New Provi- dence, also owned by Wind- fields, achieved the feat. Trained by former jockey Pete McCann who rides him in morning workouts, Canebora hasn't had his paternal paren- tage established. He is either by Navy Page or Canadian Champ out of Menebora by Menetrier. The sire generally is believed tv be Canadian Champ, horse of the year in 1956 when owned by Bill Beasley of Toronto. The track bugler doesn't sound the post call in the pad- idock before a race in which iCanebora is involved, in defer- ence to the colt's fee-ings. Only stipulation 'n the selec- tion is that candidates must be Canadian-bred.
