At the time of the thalidomide cases, federal authorities said they were legally powerless to do anything but issue warnings against the administering of the drug to pregnant women. MARKSON, Teenagers Show Stars It's reported to be spreading Said three-star Jane -Phil- lips, 19: 'It's a good-idea. Boys who wear 'three stars like I do seem to get on well with me. I don't feel let down when I date a three-star boy." Commented four-star Gra- ham Tanner, 20: "I don't date girls with more or less stars than I have. Courting is now a real pleasure, Both the girl I date and I know exactly where we stand. You don't hurt any- body's feelings this way." A social worker who spends much time with young people --and who asked not to be identified by name--said: "They're wearing these stars all right. But I've found nobody yet modest enough to wear one star, or promiscu- ous enough to wear five." The teen-agers even com- posed a verse to explain the system: One star--must ask ma. Two star--ah, ah, ah. Three star-- ha, ha, ha. Four star--not too far. Five star--stop the car. A commentator in London's Daily Sketch wrote: "Their self - imposed star system may sound crude, but is it not exactly what most parents demand of their chil- dren when they ask them questions?"
