Valachi Evidence By HAROLD MORRISON WASHINGTON (CP)--A Cana- dian judge watching the current congressional crime spectacular says any lawyer worth his salt could make a "monkey" out of Joseph Valachi's evidence against the underworld. "He wouldn't get far with a jury--corroborating evidence is led," adds Judge Bruce Macdonald, chairman of the On- tario Police Commission, who has been watching Valachi's performance before the Senate investigations subcommittee. The U.S. justice department's top witness against Cosa Nos'ra plunges into disclosures about the overlords of the underworld with such a welter of confusing names and events that even some of the Senate investigators are baffled. Mary McGrory, writing in the Washington Star, says: "Trying to unravel Valachi's long an- swers. is like eating spaghetti. Spear # strand and it turned out to be a yard long. Roll it around 'suddenly slips off in a splatter." Valachi clearly recalls events that took place 32 years ago but suddenly becomes extremely vague about Cosa Nostra unde1- world operations' in more re- cent years. He admits freely he was in- volved in a number of killings. But he never was there when the trigger was pulled, MAKES MISTAKES He tells the senators that Gi- rolomo Santuccio, alias Bobby Boyle, murdered two gangland bosses Nov. 5, 1930. He even tells them where Bobby Doyle now lives--in Stamford, Conn. But when it turns out that the » ee tad . a Bobby Doyle of Stamford is a righteous-living irisnman with a says he's sorry--he meant Hart- ford, Conn. | "He tires easily," says Sen- ator John McClelllan, subcom- mittee 'chairman, in explaining why some of Valachi's answers appear garbled, slightly remote, twisted or spoken in such a slur- ring low voice that few can un- derstand him. "That's why I have decided to cut down the daily hours of ais testimony." The oddity of the whole thing to be the top witness, a sub- committee investigator fully guides the direction of Va- lachi's testimony with the aid of a huge chart showing the jim nS SaNee care- evoiuuicn or tne New York gangs ithe slain and the slayers, right to the present day, If this information is already available, why then is Valachi's public testomony required? "This may be a good way of increasing public interest in the drive against crime in the THE OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, October 4, 1703 15) io i HAD GOOD TRIP MONTREAL (CP)-- Dr. Dan Boghen and his wife drove 6,500 miles to Panama in eight weeks after he was awarded a Wenner- Gren Foundation grant 10 study ancient medical customs there. Their 1960 model car suffered only a flat tire and a broken fan belt on the trip. U.S.," says Judge Macd "Perhaps the rising public in- terest will itself produce more doubtedly there will have to be is that while Valachi is supposed|more evidence than that of Va- lachi to get convictions, We just don't do it this way in Canada. We keep our investigations con- fidential. Perhaps that is a good) thing." pressure for prosecutions.
