~ ]Q THE OSHAWA TIMES, Seturdey, September 21, 1963 World War 'Herbie' _ Now Advertising Man OTTAWA (CP)--Anyone who was overseas during the Second World War will remember "Herbie", the droopy - nosed character who brightened the pages of the Canadian Army newspaper Maple Leaf. Well, Herbie was in town here Friday. And across the table from him sat William G, Bing Coughlin, the former army ser-|t; geant who put Herbie in cartoon form and wrung laughter from = of battle-weary sol- For those who lost track of Herbie, they 'might like to know that he's still in the army, sta- tioned at Camp Petawawa, Ont., and is a corporal in the medical corps. His name is Norman =-- but that means little since everyone calls him Her- The man who made him fa- mous now heads an advertising agency in Philadelphia. Like his life - long buddy, Herbie, Mr. was born in Ottawa, but he moved to Philadelphia with his mother when he was still in school, returning to his native city in 1941 to go through basic training with. Herbie in the 4th Princess Louise Dragoon Guards. JUST WAITED | They were separated for sev- eral years, but then at the be- ginning of 1944 they were both | together on the Maple Leaf in Italy, raising the dickens. Sg'. Coughlin, with pen in hand, simply waited until Herbie off a stunt that would Herbie turned on the grin that did the trick. A short, stocky figure with squared-off mous- tache, his face lights with de- lightful charm when a -- covers his face. 'TIT had no sappeiulilitiie then," he explained. "Except for Bing." He didn't think he was cutting capers any more than most soldiers, but he had a remarkable tendency for get- ting caught. Did he ever lose his stripes? he was asked. Herbie thought for a moment. "Yes." "Many times?" Doda thought a bit longer. "Yes." His creator helped him out. "Dozens of times, eh Herbie?" "Well, about 15 times," said Herbie, ALWAYS KNEW He said he always knew he was being demoted when Maj. Doug MacFarlane, then in charge of the Maple Leaf, and now vice-president and editor- in-chief of the Toronto Tele- gram, greeted him with: "Good morning, sapper." There was one time when Maj. MacFarlane decided a cer'ain establishment in an Ital-| ian town should be put out of bounds, and he told-Herbie, who was in the newspaper's art de- ent, to draw such a sign. Herbie did the job, then that night he went to see what he put out of bounds. When the ma jor saw the corporal emerging i from the place, 'He didn't like it at all." Herbie also seemed to recall something-about being out in,a mine-infested field, following a night on the town, npr Ag of mine sweeping. He carried a room. This was the first time Bing and Herbie had seen each other since 1950 and they were hav- ing a ball as they relived their riproaring days on the Italian front, While they have gone their separate ways since war, Bing says they picked up exactly where they left off when they met, 'Yes, sir, we can still pick up the ball and run with it.' Their old unit is being pre- sented with new colors today by Princess Alice, and like many other veterans, Bing and Her- bie will be in the stands. The army brought them together for the occasion.
