Thermostats Reveal House Zone Control When you're buying a home, whether it's new or from a for- mer owner, it's a sound idea ' always toe count the thermo- stats. It cguid save a great deal of trouble. Counting thermostats is particularly important under the following circumstances. If the house has a spread-out floor plan; if you intend: to make use of a finished basement area; if one of its features is large, concentrated glass areas, such as picture windows; if there is a room or rooms over unheated areas such as a garage; if it is a split level home; if living and sleeping quarters are in dis- tinct areas; and, as a general rule of thumb. if the house has an overall area of 1400 sq. ft. or more. Under any of those conditions and, in fact, under others as , well, the number of thermo- stats cam indicate whether or not the house has zone control. If there is not more than one, it can be taken for granted that ;, heat distribution is uneven. Although several factors some- times can be combined one ther- mostat can hardly be expected te meet all conditions in any but the smallest homes and still do an. adequate job. Even the finest thermostat, says Honeywell heating engi- neers, can measure the temper- ature only in the area in which it is located. Basically, zone control offers a means of controlling heating and cooling according to the needs of each major living area. It uses a separate thermostat to. regulate the temperature of each, The result is that you can select the temperature you want in each individual zone, no mat- ter what the weather, without upsetting the comfort of the other areas. A separate thermostat sys- tem for each major area can result in substantial fuel say- ings while, at the same time, it provides a hign level of com- fort throughout the home. TME OSHAWA TIMES, Friday, September 12, 1963 Under the conditions listed above, a house becomes espe- cially vulnerable to the effects of the sun and wind. Almost invariably the result is over- heating in.some areas and un- derheating in others. -- Zoning can be utilized to meet the requirements of multi- storey homes, open ceilings, un- usual floor plans, wings, struction, fireplaces and other pg causes of heat loss or in Since the concept. of dividing a home into areas for heating purposes was introduced by Honeywell some years ago, it has been embraced by build- porches, variations in wall -con-' ers and heatifig engineers. to a \marked degree rly 'since new equipment has low- | ered costs. Today, zoning is con- sidered to be essential for most modern homes, Builders are dis- covering that prospective buy- ers are unwilling to put up with heating problems, of which there have been many, for the sake of some more "glamor. ous'"' advantage, There is a growing demand for zone control, too, from those who own older homes. * In many instances installation cam be made at a moderate price. The governing factor is 'wheth- er or not the duct work needs to be replaced. Beau Valley by Kassinger ""INCOMPARABLE'*' .
