, Utility rooms in two-storey » 2 THE OSHAWA TIMES. Fridey. September 13. 1963 Questions Cast Light On Good Floor Plan Recognizing a good interior floor plan will take a bit of ctice, according to the Clay rick and Tile Institute, but here are several basic questions eto can ask yourself about any use, a Without ' going through any other room, can you go directly from: Living room to bath- room: Kitchen to Dining Area? Kitchen to Bedroom Area? Bed- room to Bathroom (without be- ing seen from other parts of the house)? Back or side door to kitchen? Basement to out- side? H A house with a good floor) plan will have living, sleeping, and working zones clearly sep- arated from each other, yet co-| ordinated not only with the other areas but with the sun and the outdoor area. It should be easy to reach the porch, patio, or terrace from.the house for|- pleasant outdoor living. Let's examine each room separately: KITCHEN The Small Homes Council of the University of Illinois stud- ied kitchens in more than a hundred housing developments and concluded that more than 90 per cent had _ insufficient base cabinet storage, 77 per cent had insufficient wall cab- inets, and 67 per cent had in- edequate counter space. In addition, a Cornell Univer-| © sity study of efficient kitchen design recommended that the distance from refrigerator to|* sink to range should form a triangle with a walking distance of 12 to 20 feet. There should be counter space on both sides of the sink and alongside range |: and refrigerator. Finally, the kitchen should be : a bright, cheery place with proper lighting (good orienta- tion will give the room brizht morning sunlight), ventilation, and sufficient room to prepare a meal. LIVING ROOM Is, it bright and airy, is it Jarge enough, it is located to avoid through traffic? Look for the extra touch of glamor pro- vided perhaps by exposed brick walls or a brick fireplace. DINING ROOM | Briefly abandoned by design- ers, the dining room or area is back with new emphasis. Fam- ilies who have lived in homes without dining rooms or areas are emphatic in stressing their | @ importance. You should be able to reach the dining room di- rectly from the kitchen, while the kitchen sink dishes should be screened from view -- possibly by a handsome brick divider. BEDROOMS Are adult bedrooms big enough to hold a desk or vanity and chairs as well as bedroom furniture? Will your present furniture fit the new room? Children's rooms need adequate window area and enough room for study and play. BATHROOMS Bathrooms should be central- ' Jy located and have plenty of storage space. Today, extra bathrooms are much in demand and will prove an important re-| gale feature later. FAMILY OR "REC" ROOM The family or recreation room today is an important part of living for many families, since it lends itself to the ease and informality that go with to- day's increased leisure time and Jarger families. LAUNDRY In one-storey homes, a laun- dry near the kitchen and bath- |; room is ideal, but it should not be located where food is being prepared. There should be ade- quate storage for soap, deter- gents, etc., counter space for sorting, and space enough for): droning. The clothes dryer ehould be located on an outside| @ wall and vented; this is a must. split-level homes should have | STORAGE similar facilities, while a clothes; There never seems to be chute to the laundry area can| enough storage area.
