THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, September 4, 1963 Unrest Grows Despite Stable Congo Rule LEOPOLDVILLE (AP)--Pre- mier Cyrille Adoula is trying to steer The Congo around a gath-. ering storm of unrest. This former Belgian colony is economically in a bad way. _ There is runaway inflation. Graft and corruption undermine ' the. administration. Adoula nevertheless has slowly achieved a degree of sta- bility unprecedented since inde- pendence in 1960. Parliamentary elections, prob- ably early next year, throw a question mark over the future. This is a major reason why the United States and some other countries oppose with- drawal of United Nations forces. u The UN Congo Operation is desperately short of money and Secretary - General U Thant wants to pull out 7,700 UN troops, including a Canadian contingent, the end of this year. They would hand over to Gen. Joseph Mobutu's 30,000 - strong Congolese Army the task of maintaining order. These sol- diers range from well - dis- ciplined para - commandos to troops in the back coutry| | quick to resort 'to looting and banditny when given the oppor- tunity. A retraining scheme is under| & way. A handful of Belgian 'offic- ers are back as_ instructors. More are promised. Mobutu and 200 of his crack para-comman- dos are on a course in Israei. But it seems likely that sev- eral months must elapse before the army can be relied upon to keep the peace through a coun- try the size of Western Europe. Adoula is widely respected, moderate and generally pro- Western, though he lacks dy- namism and is no crowd-puller. You can think of many appetizing ways to please your family, but one sure way is to treat them toa Sunday dinner of delicious tempt- ing Roast Loin of Pork, cooked to perfection and served with all the trimmings. The man behind the meat counter has the Pork Loin for you, perfectly cut and trimmed to suit every taste. What's more, he'll guarantee that it will be the most enjoyable roast you've ever had.
