It's an idea that has worked elsewhere, Most Canadian weeds came from Europe, leaving behind the natural enemies that helped keep them under control. One such example is the s0- called Canada thistle, a much tougher customer to handle in Canada than in its native Eu- rope. But a tiny flea beetle from Europe is. being releassd in Canada this year after exten- sive laboratory testing in which the insect cut thistles to pieces by devouring its leaves. The whole process of to | with insects is calle biological control and the work in Canada centres on the fed- eral agriculture department's research institute at Belleville, Ont. Dr. Peter Harris directs a program that has shown some favorable results, Marked success has been scored in other countries, In Australia, about 60,000,000 acres }Of land were infested with the iprickly pear cactus. The high cost of chemical and mechan- ica! control, coupled with the relatively low value of the land, required a special solution, | Tests were carried out with |51 insects, five of which proved useful, One of them, a moth, destroyed most of the plant pests within four years, The Canadian work began in 1950 with a weed called. St, John's-wort on southern British Columbia rangeland. California earlier had used insects to clear up a similar probiem. Two types of California beetle were imported and became es- tablished, but only partial con- trol was achieved--in an area covered by snow in winter, pro- tecting the beetles, PONTIAC - BUICK - AC DEMONSTRATOR SALE --AT-- The CLIFF MILLS MOTORS LTD. 266 KING ST. THEN, A MATCH FLAME MUGGS AND SKEETER i | ~ JULIET JONES Only partial success has been achieved against prairie toad- flax although 1962 tests with a European moth are promising. In Ontario, the weed has two beetles attacking it naturally. A moth to control tansy rag- wort was released in Cape Breton in 1961 and in B.C.'s lower mainland in 1962. The Cape Breton experiment will have to be repeated because the moths apparently did not sur. vive, | This indicates the problems of biological control, even though the rewards can be Sreat in considering the relief | jto millions of hay fever suffer. ers alone if pollen-producing plants such as ragweed could be curbed by insects. Dr, Harris says public prej- udice--fear that a specially- imported insect may harm cul- tivated plants--is a major prob- lem. It is a difficult labora:ory test to prove that the imported jinsect will dine only on the plant. pest. iy insects exist. The potato beetle will eat oniy po- tato plants and billions starve annually. |. In the case of the flea beetle [being let loose against the Can. ada thistle, tests showed that more than 400 of them would -- Starve than eat anything else Clearance from both Canada and the United States is needed for release of new insect weap- ons in either country Golfer Injured By Broken Club TORONTO (CP) -- A golfer slashed hard at.a@ ball in a wooded area here Monday and wound up in hospital with slashes to his jugular vein and windpipe. He was in serious condition, suffering shock from loss of blood, ( Harold Kalies, 41, of Toronte went after his ball in the woods at Oakdale golf and country Club. Here's how police recon- Structed the accident from evi- dence at the séene: Kalles' ball apparently fell at \the base of a tree. He swung at jit with an iron and struck the jtree about eight inches from the ground. Bark was cut away at that point The club shaft broke aff 12 jinches from the bottem and the jhead flew at Kalles, slicing at his throat He staggered from the woods with blood streaming from his wound and was picked up py other players. | BANQUETS ] PHONE 723-4641 GENOSHA HOTEL LARRY BRANNON J POR ME.
