12 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, July 24, 1963 Milk Producers Claim Undersold KIRKLAND LAKE, Ont. (CP) Northern Ontario milk produc- ers and distributors complained here Monday that southern On- tario concentrated products were being shipped north and py under-selling locally pro- ced whole milk products, The complaints were made at a hearing of the Ontario Milk Inquiry Committee. A distributors' brief urged legislation to prevent the sale of southern Ontario milk in the north, It asked that concen- trated milk, now classed as ev- aporated, be placed in a class with fluid milk. This would mean that concentrated milk producers would have to pay top rates for milk. The brief said some northern dairies had already started to market reconstituted and con- centrated milk products to save their business but the use of such products was damaging the producer. It claimed producers in Tim- iskaming and Cochrane had lost $200,000 in milk sales in the last year because of concentrated products brought in from south- ern Ontario. PRODUCERS ON HAND Represented at the hearing were producers and distributors from a region extending 120 miles south of here to Tim- agami and 200 miles north to Kapuskasing. The Timiskaming Milk Pro- ducers Association blamed the lack of proper provincial milk board regulations for the under- selling. Vice - president Chester Hop- kins suggested milk should be marketed in zones organized and controlled by the provin- vee WALKER'S| SUMMER CLEARANCE BLOUSES SHIRTS PEDAL PUSHERS Reg. Such an all- tlie Ontario plan would be in the best interests of everyone, The producers' brief said the future of. local milk markets should be taken to bar the in- filtration of cheaper southern Ontario products, Distributors also said they could not compete with the cheaper southern products be- cause they had agreements with farmers to take certain quotas and they could not pay less, Their brief said milk prices in the north were one cent cheaper than in Toronto despite the fact that milk was 30 to 40 cents cheaper a hundredweight in southern Ontario, It claimed unfair advertising by southern concentrated milk producers was undermining the imperial quart.
