soe CUSTOM BOAT BUILDING IS WHITBY INDUSTRY GM PRESENTATION Previews Of Progress Promises Excitement * Have you ever seen a Ground Effect Machine--a vehicle that skims over land or water on a eushion of air? Or a car run solely by the power of the sun? Would you like to understand how a jet engine works, ex- plore the mystery of controlling tomorrow's space ships and lis- ten to a radio which is powered | by "liquid sunshine?" These are some of the excit- fng moments in store for when Previews of Progress, the world famous General Motors of Can- ada Science Show, one of the outstanding features of Whitby Trade Fair Board's third an- nual Industrial Trade Fair, opening at Whitby Arena to- morrow and running through Thursday. Packed with exciting demon- etrations of science's dramatic role in industrial progress, the 45-minute stage show is non- commercial and admission free. 'Presented by a two-man team and narrated in under- standable, non-technical lan- guage, the show uses exciting showmanship to make science come alive for thousands of stu- dents and adults to view it each year. Thousands more see it on television. "We seek through Previews to inspire more young people to make science their career and provide the trained talent Can- ada must have to keep pace with the promise of the future," E. H. Walker, president of Gen- eral Motors of Canada, says. "Our demonstrations drama- tize the inquiring mind of all scientists which assumes tha' everything " and anything can be im . Previews hints at the tremendous secrets of power and energy that wait in the world of tomorrow ¢0 be un- lockéd by the young people of today who become scientisis." One of the highlights of the show is the Ground Effect Ma- chine, also known as an air car or peripheral jet vehicle. The small model in the Previews show resemblés a flying boat. It hovers above the table top while the lecturer explains how it works. Air is pulled through the top of the vehicle and blown out at the bottom by a small propeller. The higher pressure under the craft keeps the ve- hicle floating on air. The amazing GM Sunmobile, the mimiature car that actually runs on the power of the sun, depends upon eight photio- electric cells located on its hood for its operation. These cells convert light energy into electri- cal energy which in turn powers a small electric motor to move the car. In the Previews stow, the demonstrator uses a 300-watt lamp to duplicate the sun's rays. As the light strikes the cells, the 15 'inch blue and white Sun- sm pene ROUSSEAU HERITAGE HOUSE | -- roaituar et Sniours QP Antinus -- ean. The Previews audience wil] see yet another example of sun power in the f fuel cell. This device converts chem- ical energy of distilled plants into electrical energy with four times the efficiency now obtain- ed by burning coal, oil or, nat- ural gas. In the show, a few drops of "liquid sunshine" provide suffi- cient energy to operate a port- able radio. If a method of mak- ing the fuel cell practical were ever found, this device would have a tremendous economic impact and greatly aid to the life of coal and oil reserves. _In addition to sun power, the!
