This year he's getting a chance to play regularly. farm system ofy Philadelphia Phillies, was traded the next year to the Dodgers and trav- elled around various levels of minor league ball from Pony to' Triple A with Spokane of the Pacific Coast League. Late in 1961 the Dodgers called him up and in his first game he was walked as a pinch-hitter, His second appear- ance, also as a pinch-hitter, he unded out. Next time--in St. pe oat got his first major league hit and he still prefers the Cardinals' park for his hit- ting. If he hadn't resolved as a youth to get into the major leagues--"I told myself when I was 13 that I'd play baseball in the majors by the time I was 23," he said -- Harkness might have made it in profes- sional hockey. He was invited to Montreal Canadiens junior A hockey camp in 1957 but his baseball bosses suggested he'd better make a choice and he took baseball. "I always felt I wanted to be a baseball player," he said. As for New York, "it's what all the guys call the big apple, and I'm happy to be able to play here." Singles by Bob Marshall, Jim Couch and Ted Lutton, in the second stanza, gave Canadian Tire their first run. In the third inning, they exploded with a six- run rally, on as many hits, to shell Bob Hawton from the mound and continue the attack on reliever Rick Stokes, Paul Domm's homer in the fifth and another run in the sixth, when: Roger Reeson open- ed with a double and scored on two sacrifice hits, completed Oshawa's total. Reeson had three hits with Ted Lutton and Paul Domm having two apiece. Every other member of the team had at least one safety.
