Randall Roy Metals For Tony's Big Win "Metro" Szeryk is the man's! meme and what a softball pitch- er! Last night, at Alexandra Park an overflow crowd esti- mated at 1,500 crowded in to watch Tony's newly acquired pitcher in action. The comments the were "Wow", '"He's fast', "Where did he come from?" and s0 on. Szeryk, a 27-year-old bespec- tacled righthander deserved every "rave" notice he re- ceived, pitching Tony's to a bril- lant 6-0 suthout win over Ran- dall Roy Metals in the Beaches Major Fastball league game. Tony's, who lost the services of ace pitcher Andy Anderson only last week when the officer in the RCMP was transferred to Vancouver, B.C., picked up Szeryk Monay _ aftermoon. Metro, who formerly pitched in the world's tournament, with Windsor and Sudbury, has been the number one sought by man- ager Frank Foley for the past five seasons. Szeryk, now a na- tive of Sudbury, came to Osh- awa as a personal favor for Manager Frank Foley due to the loss of Andy Anderson. Hoping to be able to secure full-time employment, Szeryk committed himself on pitching two games for Tony's. On Tuesday night, in Stoney Creek, he worked 11 complete innings, allowing only four: hits while claiming 23 strikeou's, en- route to a 1-0 win over Hamil- ton Quigley's. He was even more brilliant last night, giving up only two hits, registering 21 via the strikeout route and issuing only one walk. That gives him 44 strikeouts in 20 innings. He struck out the side on three dif- ferent occasions. Immediately following the game, he returned to Sudbury, waiting for further information regarding a job with a' local automobile company. At this time, there is a good chanc2 Metro may wind up pitching for Oshawa club. Konnie Taylor, the forgotten man on the Tony's staff, may get his start tomorrow night against Randall Roy, in the con! tinuation of the 'home-and- home" series. Taylor, voted the most MVP in the "City League'"' last sca- son, suffered a torn fingernail on his pitching hand, in a spring workout and hasn't seen action as yet. "Ab" Deasley, a_hard-luck chucker with Randall Roy's last year, was also in a Tony usi- form. Bev Smith is the other Oshawa regular pitcher. Bob Booth, veteran catcher, claims thae Zseryk is one of the best he has ever caught. Booth has caught or faced the best, including Charlie Justice, Nor- mie Bagnell, Dick Taynes, John. ny Edwards and Andy Anderson, "Met" is just a little rusty, claimed "Bobby", but with a few more games under his belt, he could become unbeatable. Booth himself took a bad knock on his stomach from a foul tip, but finished up the game. Jack Armstrong, second base- man, was forced to leave the game, when he again injured his right leg. Danny Price also was injured in a play at second base. Bouth and Armstrong will both play on Friday, however Price is hsted as a doubtful starter. The win for Tony's was their eighth in the last nine games and their sixth shutout. Tony's jumped out in front in the 4th on a single by Jack "Red" MacDermaid, a walk to Booth, a choice play, a clutch triple by Sonny Hill amd a double by "Barney" Oldfield. Two more runs scored in the 5th on back-to-back hits by Nick Mroczeck and MacDermaid. Both "Nicky" and '"'Red" scored on Jack Armstrong's svzond hit. Jack Armstrong, Brent Old- field and Jack MacDermaid led Tony's nine-hit attack on loser Don Quance with two hits apiece.
