Today's Queens Plate Is Wide-Open Affalr By JACK SULLIVAN Canadian Press Sports Editor "Warriors Day is the horse to beat," said one chap, identified as a bond salesman. "For my money, I kinda like Welcome Pardner," said a housewife. "Every other horse has got to beat Royal Maple," chimed in a taxi driver. "What's the matter with the filly Menedict?" asked a street car conductor. "Tf you want a real longshot, say at 30 to 1, watch Son Blue," said an electrician. This is the sort of talk that went on for a couple of hours the other night when a bunch of the boys--and girls--gathered in a downtown Toronto hotel to talk about horse racing, specif- ically today's Queen's Plate. There were about 150 of them and it's safe to say most went, home confused as ever about the outcome of the $50,000-added classic, Canada's richest race. The get-together was unique. JOCKEYS AS GUESTS It was sponsored by the Thoroughbred Racing Club, an| organization made up of people who like to gab about their favorite sport. People of all walks of life. belong to it-- engineers, doctors, lawyers, stenographers and so on. They pay $2 a year plus $1 a month toward the cost of a small banquet room in a hotel and talk about the sport. This month's session was what the organizers called the annual Queen's Plate Preview. They had jockeys, horse own- ers and Jockey Club officials as their guests. "Well," said jockey Ron Tur- cotte, 'Royal Maple could take it." The 22-year-old rider from Grand Falls, N.B. will be aboard the colt owned by J. Louis Levesque of Montreal. Later on, when asked about longshot winner, Turcotte warned the audience not to overlook. House of Commons. "This colt is badly under- rated," he said. "I think he's better than people think he is." WIDE OPEN RACE There was some backing for Club President Al Shand. Canebora, owned by E. P. Taylor of Toronto, This horse won a division of the Plate trail last Monday, beating out Royal Maple, but the Canebora back- ers explained they made their choice because Taylor has won seven of the last 14 Plates. John Mooney, managing di- rector of the Jockey Club, summed up the situation when he said: "At this date every year I'm usually able to make some sort of a firm selection, but not now. "Right now I'd have to name at least five who could take it all. They'd be Royal Maple, Welcome Pardner, Prince Ma- ple, Warriors' Day and Mene- dict, It's a wice-open race if ever I've seen one," With that, Thoroughbred Rac- ing Club members adjourned for some light refreshment. "You know what,"' confided "All of these. guys will go to the Plate and many won't even bet. "They'll be looking at the pretty dressed-to-kill fillies in the clubhouse." Cassius Clay Keeping Quiet LONDON (AP) -- American heavyweight Cassius Clay said Friday--believe it or not--he has finished talking in public until he's beaten British cham- pion Henry Cooper at Wembley Stadium next Tuesday. "I might have one or two pri- 'vate training sessions," Clay said. "But I'm telling no one where they will be." He said he wanted no more interviews, no more pictures-- and he, himself, Cassius Clay, was going to stop talking. The Louisville Lip has been talking ever since he got here May 27 -- and boosted the gate in the process. Apparently, the gate has been sufficiently boosted. The 21 - year - old Clay, un- beaten in 18 fights, will weigh in with Cooper at the London Palladium, the home of British vaudeville, Tuesday. Jim Wicks, Cooper's. mana- ger, said: "We know that Clay, for all his reputation, can not box much. He is all arms, punches with little power. Clay has only to drop his hands once in the fight, and Cooper's left hook, the sherpest in the world, will hit him Clay is a 5-1 favorite to de- feat Cooper and move into a challenging position for a crack at the world crown.
