The Liberals and Conserva- tives are both disclaiming any part in such acceptance, The new Liberal government has said repeatedly that it did not make Canada's nuclear pol- icy; the Conservatives had and the Liberals were simply carry- ing it out, _Not so, say the Conserva- tives. They had made no nu- Cear commitments to NATO, the United States or anybody else. It was the Liberals, they Say, who decided to accept nu- clear warheads from the U.S, POINTS TO TORIES Pirme Minister Pearson said in the Commons May 21 that former Prime Minister Diefen- baker made a "moral and po- litical" commitment Feb, 20, 1959, to accept nuclear war- heads for the Bomarc anti-air- craft missile, Voodoo jet inter- ceptor, CF-104 low - level jet bomber and the Honest John artillery rocket. Opposition Leader Diefen- baker retorted that if Mr. Pear- son knew in 1959 that Canada was committed to a nuclear role why had he opposed ac- ceptance of nuclear warheads right up until Jan. 12, 1963, This was the date of Mr, Pear- son's Scarborough, Ont., speech in which he said Canada should accept nuclear arms at least until its defence role could be reviewed, "Never at any time was an undertaking to accept nuclear weapons made by the Con- servative government of Can- Diefenbaker de- clared, Cd DISPOSAL. Results could be important for the Canadian farmer and for the Canadian treasury. For the men who planned this world food congress already agree that the turbulent undernourished areas, particularly in eastern Asia, re- quire huge new souces of food and that the industrialiezd coun- tries with unsold stockpiles in their bins should do more to aid their fellow men. But the reported biggest need of all--to be able to tackle this problem on a global scale and under global co-operation -- is likely to go unresolved as estimated 1,000 delegates / ex- press their views and prdpos- als. Here, as in other places, the cold war intervene, CHINA NOT INVITED Communist China has one of the biggest food and population problems, But because Red China is not a member of the United Nations, it has not been invited to attend. And yet a lot of congress discussion will dwell on China's 700,000,000 population and the Chinese struggle for food. Russia, preoccupied by politi- cal problems at home, has shown little interest in the gath- ering which is designed to stime ulate action by nations and gov- ernments by generating publie concern.
