1@ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Monday, June 3, 1963 Canadian Grain Ship Loading Starts Again MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Load- ing of the Canadian grain ship Redwing was resumed Satur- day after an officer of the long- shoremen's union promised to try to prevent further demon- strations against Upper Lakes Shipping Limited of Toronto, owners of the Redwing. Grain elevator employees, members of the United Brew- ery Workers Union, quit work Thursday and again Friday when longshoremen held mo- tor-car parades in front of the ship's berth, John Brzek, secretary-treas- of Local 815, Interna- tional Longshoremen's Associa- tion, promised Circuit Judge Robert Curley Friday he would try to prevent forther demon- strations. Brzek was found in contempt of court by the judge, who las year issued an injunc- tion against picketing of Upper Lakes vessels in Milwaukee. Judge Curley ruled that Brzek conspired to act in concert with the Canadian unit of the Sea- farers: International Union in its campaign to again man Up- per Lakes ships, now manned by members of 'the Canadian Maritime Union, a Canadian Labor Congress affiliate. Reds To Hike Links With West Europe WASHINGTON (AP) -- Amer Meanwhile in Chicago the Up- per Lakes vessel Howard L. Shaw marked off another day of idleness S#*turday when members of Local 418, Grain Elevator,-Flour and Feed Mill Workers Union, continued to re- fuse to load the ship. The Shaw has been standing empty at a dock since it arrived April 22. The elevator union members, employed by Continental Grain Company, are acting in sym- pathy with the SIU. ; Jack Connor, president of the grain union, said Saturday that he had told the members to do their jobs after the U.S, Dis- trict Court intervened Wednes- day. But the men, acting as in- dividuals, refused. Judge John W. Holland issued a temporary injunction at that time directing the grain union to end the boycott of the How- ard L. Shaw. U.S. government lawyers went back to the court Friday and asked for civil contempt action. As a result, Connor and two other officers of the grain union are scheduled to appear before Judge James Parsons in U.S. District Court today to show why they should not be held in contempt of court for not stopping the members' hands-off attitude toward the Canadian vessel. "I believe our men are fear- ful to do any work in connection with the Howard L. Shaw," Connor told a reporter Satur- day. He said he referred to vio lence in the struggle between the two sailors' unions. Two members of the stranded ves- sel's crew, Stanley Walters, 33, of Trinity, Nfld., and Clayton B, Sutton, 22, of Owen Sound, were beaten Thursday night while they were walking on shore near their boat's berth in the Calumet River. Police reported no progress in their investigation of the beatings. Charles F, Wilson, Canadian consul-general in Chicago, sent a telegram to O. W. Wilson, po- lice superintendent, and Mayor Richard J. Daley. It urged them to use every effort to cap- ture the assailants and to "'take whatever steps may be neces- sary to ensure that such in- stances of bodily harm are not repeated." The explanation behind this) course is an apparent change) in Moscow's philosophy, which) for years has been based on the| simplification that all major in | ternational issues should be dis-| cussed directly with the United) States. According to reports carefully) evaluated in Western capitals,| Soviet leaders now recognize Western Europe as a powerful factor on the international scene) --disregarding France's conten- tion that there is no such thing as a political entity in Western Europe. This new trend in Soviet think-| ing is privately confirmed by} Communist sources. It may pro-| vide one explanation for the So- viet attitude of recent months, variously portrayed as a lull or &@ pause. « The expected Soviet diplo- matic move in the European capitals will be double-barreled. First, it will be aimed at sound- ing out to what extent the NATO allies can act independently from Washington. Indirectly, it) also will be a renewed attempt Need holiday money ?
