Att 8,462 SPORT FROM BRITAIN Fearless Freddie Trueman Fans Cricket LONDON (CP) --- Every now and then the hallowed halls of English cricket echo to the broad-vowelled complaints ut- tered by Yorkshireman Freddie Trueman. It was with some trepidation that cricket lovers read re- cently the headline: "I'll never play for England again, says Trueman." And here we go again, they thought. fast bowler's current grumble is that £50 was docked from his bonus for last winter's tour of Australia and New Zea- land. The bonus is given to Eng- land's professionals "for good behavior and contribution to team spirit." Every English cricket fan knows that good behavior isn't one of Trueman's best points. He's been a rebel ever since he flung his first curse at an un- co-operative umpire. WON'T CONFORM As for team spirit, this down- to-earth miner's son is a rugged individualist among the private school - university - executive types who make up the game's elite, A few days later Trueman ran true to form and admitted that despite the "filthy insult"). he would like to play for Eng- jand this summer in the series Huntsville Is Suspended By Lacrosse Body TORONTO (CP) -- Huntsville Warriors were suspended indef- initely Friday night by the On- tario Lacrosse A iati for Fires Again against the West Indians. Another Trueman tantrum was over and the only people likely to worry are the West In- dian batsmen who have to face the Commonwealth's most pro- lific wicket taker. "At times I'd give him £50 to shut him up," said his wife Enid, who took over as family spokesman after the initial out- burst. But she added: "Just because he is an ordin- ary Yorkshire lad and doesn't have an old school tie or speak with a plum in his mouth, they always pick on him." OTHERS NOT NAMED In fact two other tourists had £50 deducted from their bonus but neither they nor the author- ities would reveal their names. England skipper Ted Dexter and team manager, the Duke of Norfolk, those responsible for team discipline, didn't have much to say either. Did some nights on the tiles make the blue blood boil? When the Duke was placed in charge of the tour, up in Yorkshire they chuckled in their beer at the thought of "our Fred' rub- bing shoulders with His Grace. When reports of poor behav- ior among the tourists appeared in British newspapers the Duke publicly denied such goings-on. No doubt England wanted to keep the "'fines" quiet -- but it reckoned without a Trueman tongue-lashing. It was the latest move in a squabble between Huntsvile and the Ola about the league sched- ule. Huntsville threatened last Thursday to withdraw from the league unless its five out-of- town games on Friday nights were changed. In other business, Brampton and St. Catharines were each fined $25 for the unruly actions of their players last Saturday night at Brampton, when play- ers from. both teams left the! noon. CP Wirephoto PETER SNELL IS PACED BY RABBIT LOS ANGELES (AP) World record - holder Peter Snell of New Zealand, though inadvertently paced by a live rabbit, failed Friday night in his attempt to break his own world record in the half-mile. Snell breezed ahead of an al-star pack of athletes in one minute 48 seconds in the Southern Pacific Association AAU track and field cham- pionships Snell who showed the ef- fects of 3:54.9 mile last week at Modesto, was far short of his world mark of 1:45.1 As the gun sounded for the lseven-man race, a rabbli-at | pared on the track affd im- ediately took a 25-yard lead on Snell. The crowd, which usually cheers during such a race, started laughing uproar- iously. The rabbit stayed in the lead for the first lap, and'then ile--last. A 29-year-old right - hander, Osinski was sold by Kansas City Atheltics to Angels last year. In return, Lo Angeles was sup- posed to hand over Belinsky at the end of the season, but Com- missioner Ford Frick vetoed the move because of its irregular procedure. Osinski, however, remained an Angel. And now that Bo's been dropped, has been thrust into the starting rotation. The victory against Orioles was Osinski's first in the majors as a starter and in a round about way Belinsky was a two-fold contributor. For it was Dees, brought up from Hawaii the day Belinsky was sent gown, who supplied the punch/ with three hits, in- cluding a/homer jn the fifth in- ning that proved decisive. The defeat dropped Orioles into a tie with New York Yankees for the American League lead. FORD WINS Yankees closed the gap by whipping Cleveland Indians 4-0 behind Whitey Ford's three-hit- ter on a pitchers' night. 'Wee Governor' Tops Field At Western Fair LONDON, Ont. By JACK SULLIVAN Canadian Press Sports Editor Eleven years ago, Canada's Mr, Football sat on the Toronto Argonaut bench, a lonely, for- gotten man. Joe (King) Krol had lots of time to recall his glory days when he was the passing, run- ning, placement - kicking and punting wizard of the team. He was the man who triggered Ar- gonauts to three straight Grey Cup titles over Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the immediate post- war years. But on Nov. 29, 1952, Joe got off the bench only to kick on third down, It was to be his last appearance in a Canadian final and he went out a winner as Argonauts defeated Edmonton Eskimos 21-11, He didn't score a point that afternoon, the only time he had been kept off the scoreboard in seven finals dating back to 1943. Krol was a victim of the' frenz- 'ied search for American im- sorts by the pro clubs in Can- ada, With. American players came American coaches and many of the ball-carrying home- brews soon weré switched to de- fensive duties. HOLDS CUP RECORD But Krol made his exit as the all-time-high scorer in Cup his- tory with 30 points. He piled them up before the Canadian Rugby Union, then governing die (Dynamite) James of gina Roughriders and the Blue Bombers in the 1920s and 1930s, has moved into the runner-up slot just two points behind Krol. James was third until this week when Charlie Shepard, also of the Bombers, announced his retirement. Shepard, who sang the Bombers in 1957 from Pittsburgh Steelers of the National Football League, had Re-)six finals dating from 1953, Krol quit in 1953 at the age of 34 after a dazzling 14-year ca- reer in senior company dating back to 1939 when he played for the University of Western Ontario in the intercollegiate union, He played with Hamilton Fly- ing Wildcats of the old Ontario Rugby Football Union in 1943 four shots at Krol's record-- 1957-58-59 and 1962--and moved into second place last year when he scored 12 points on two touchdowns as Bombers edged Hamilton Tiger-Cats 28- 27, That brought his total to 29. PARKER THIRD Jackie Parker, gimpy-legged star of Edmonton Eskimos from 1954 until he was traded to Ar- gonauts this year, is third with 24 points, He also has made the final four times, in 1954-55-56 when Eskimos whipped Mont- real Alouettes three straight, and in 1960 when the Eskimos lost 16-6 to Ottawa Rough Rid- ers.
