© ffs annual three-day : Bef : (CP)--When the MONTREAL National Hockey League opens meeting next Monday, the mass of busi- ness will include such things as - g proposal to start Stanley Cup playoffs later, a rule to curb ref- : oo ogg coaches and prob- : aby the return of the American * Hockey League to draft status. There has been a feeling ong the uppr echelons of the that the gap is too short the end of the regular geason--e Sunday late in March end the start of the playoffs the following Tuesday. Teams must move hurriedly ée other cities. If the regular- geeson finish is close, some teams don't know where they'll open the playoffs until late Sun- @ay night. One or two teams may find they remain at home, and benefit by the breather. Lists of eligible players must be prepared, and there is al- ways the problem of injured players. Further, it has been found that the Tuesday opening brings the smallest attendance of the playoffs. WILL DEAL WITH START The question of a later start-- most likely dealt with by the NHL club own- ers. They are aso expected to clarify the transfer rule so that NHL players, finished for the season, can't be sent to minor moe whose season has not ended The rules committee will con- Bob Farley Quits Leafs TORONTO (CP)--First base- man Bob Farley, who ,refused to report to Toronto Maple Leafs until 10 days after the Weafs purchased his contract from De- troit Tigers, has quit t af: in a huff. : Farley, hitless in nine ti at abt for the International League Leafs, walked out after he was replaced by a pinch-hit- ter in the ninth inning of a 3-2 loss to Buffalo Bisons Tuesday night. Leaf general manager Frank Pollock said Wednesday that Farley strode into his office after the game and told Pollock to speak to Leaf manager Bill Adair. 'Nobody does a thing like this to me--but nobody," he quoted Farley as saying. Farley was subsequently sus- pended by Toronto, and it is ex- pected his contract will be sold ded to another team, 1 Thursday--will be) ore Playoffs sider a proposal to curb coaches who, it is felt, through an epi- demic of delaying tactics or pure cussedness have tried to make game officials look silly. There is a favorite particularly when play has been stopped in one end. The coach cals a couple of players to the bench. They stand and dawdle. The referee can't face off the puck because the players are offside. The referee skates to the bench. The players act dumb. The American Hockey League will continue, in the opening day, a meeting that began in New York last Monday. The AHL will discuss a proposed agreement restoring the draft. MAY HOLD DRAFT If it is ratified, the draft will be held Tuesday when the NHL also drafts from the Western Hockey League and the East- ern Professional Hockey League. The former NHL-AHL draft was discontinued in 1958 and the AHL decided to go it alone. A shortage of capable players is said to have developed. Under the proposal the NHL will draft from the AHL and subsequently, at the AHL an- nual meeting later in the month, the AHL would engage in the reverse draft. It could take NHL-owned players on the re- serve list of a pro club not a ee of the NHL or the NHL surplus players. The dis- cussed price in this draft has been $10,000. All NHL drafts are $20,000. In effect, AHL clubs could get JUST TWO DAYS TIMMINS (CP)--Joe Kav- anaugh, who stepped down as president of the North- ern Senior Hockey League last Monday, probably had one of the shortest tenures on record--two days. He was elected the previ- ous Saturday at a meeting of the league. However, he discovered Monday he had been pro- moted from corporal to ser- geant in the provincial po- lice, and will be required to report to Sault Ste. Marie by June 10. Since this would leave him almost 200 miles by road from the nearest city in the league, Kavanaugh decided it would be best to step down. Billiards vs Dyett's Sports.
