14 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursday, May 30, 1963 Willie Mays | Saves Giants Even JIM HACKLEMAN League game, Bill White' fe Press Sports Writer Imagine! Willie Mays with ihe "good field, no hit" tag. Wondrous Willie is suffering drough what is undoubtedly the roughest slump of his career at bat. But San Francisco Giants' brilliant center fielder still shows the old-time sparkle on lense. 'After a third straight hitless game Wednesday night that his average to ,243, Mays made a clutch contribu tion with a spectacular catch, in the bottom of the ninth inning at Cincinnati, He crashed into the wall in center, holding-on for a one-handed grad of pinch hitter Ken Walter's long drive that helped preserve Giants' 5-4 decision over Reds, homer with one out in the last of the 10th gave St. Louis Car- dinals a 3-2 victory over Hous- ton Colts. HITS 10TH HOER Bailey, who is batting 329 and has 29 runs batted in on 28 hits, powered Giants into a 5-1 lead when he poled his 10th homer with two on in the sixth inning. Reds picked up a second run against Juan Marichal in the seventh, then the right- hander was replaced by Pierce after' Marty Keough's two-run homer with one out in the! eighth. Pierce saved Marichal's sev-| enth victory in 10 decisions, holding Reds hitless the rest of the way--with the aid of Mays' sjtion five warmup pitches fn the fourth. White's homer nailed down Cards' sixth victory in their last seven games, breaking a tie created when Colts scored a run in the eighth on doubles by Brock Davis and Al Spangler. They blanked the same club, 7-0, on Monday night at Kew Beach, so now both Andy Anderson and Bev Smith have one shutout to their credit, at the early part of the season. One solid homer, by catcher Bob Booth, proved the first run of the game and the only one needed; After a couple of solid blows and a walk, Bev Smith came to bat with the bases loaded and two out -- and he whiffed the big chance, But a little later in the game, after a pair of hard knocks, he came up again and this time lifted one high, into centre-field and the fielder was caught playing in a little too close, failed jj} to the right spot in his try for a "backward" catch -- so the two base-runners scampered home and Bev ended up on 3rd base. He deserved his win, allowing only four hits, but Jack Rainbow was almost as effective -- he yielded ofly a half-dozen, Tomorrow night, Tony's head for Hamilton, for a@ game with Smart's Cleaners. x x x x (EMORIAL DAY and even the keen interest being gener- ated py the tense pennant races in both American and Na- tional Leagues, takes a back seat today, with the a Indiahapolis Speedway classic the top sports event of day. The type of skill (plus car power) required can be imagined when you know that highly-rated racers such as Pedro Rodriguez of Mexico City and Masten Gregory, big winner here at 'Mos- port last year, both failed to qualify. : x x x BRIGHT BITS: a City and District softball fans are re- minded that there's another doubleheader billed for Alexan- dra Park tonight and so far this season, every game has been a real sizzler, with sparkling fielding plays and good pitching. A player on the disqualified list draws no salary. Belinsky, who had won only one of eight games for the Angels this season, was op- tioned to Hawaii Saturday night. But he decided later that he didn't want to go to the island. Angel general manager Fred Haney said Belinsky came to him Tuesday and asked if he could be put on the voluntarily retired list. Had such a procedure been followed, Belinsky could not have been reinstated for at | least 60 days. Haney said he decided, in- stead to have Bo put on the disqualified list from which he can be withdrawn any time he agrees to report to Hawaii as instructed. "There is no animosity be- tween us,"' said Haney, "I like the guy. I just think he's not getting the benefit of his own abilities by his activities off the field." | | Haney presumably was re- - ferring to Belinsky's liking for night life.
