An January 15, 1963, we submitted to the Town Coun- cil of the Town of Whitby a request for subsidy for the continuation of our Ambulance service, The following Town Council, Corporation of the Town of Whitby, Jan, 15, 1963 Dear Sirs; | | | | We submit for your consideration this request for a subsidy for continuation of our ambulance service which we are render- ing to the people of the Town of Whitby, This ambulance service was originated in 1929 as the first and only ambulance in the town, and has continued on a 24- hour basis since, excepting for a short period when there was a second ambulance in operation by another firm, According to our records we have never shown a profit in the operation of our ambulance, It has, however, been a very necessary service to the citizens of the Town of Whitby. Now, due to greatly increased costs of labor, replacement of equipment, vehicle maintenance, insurance, etc., we feel that we can no longer operate on the same 24-hour basis without fin- ancial assistance in the amount of $5,000.00 per annum. If we do not receive this subsidy before March 31, 1963 our operation will have to be curtailed to some degree, As has been previously mentioned, this servica is not only necessary, but vital to the welfare of the citizens af the Town, We are well equipped to handle-all emergencies, an ve knows Association were presented to the first and second place winners 'in each individual grade. C. Town Funeral Chapel Ltd., and Ambulance Service, We appeal to you, the citizens of the Town of Whitby to stand behind us in this st for the + stated in our in- itial letter to the Council, and for the following: 1, Our sefvice was and is, immediately available to any person in need of it, day or night, 365 days a year. 2. It has been suggested that if our service were to be dis- continued, ambulances from neighboring municipalities would be available, This would be true only to a point, inasmuch as these people must first service their own territory, while Whitby y, and pt d best service. must always be 3. We feel that the cost to the Town to provide its own ambulance service would be an exhorbitant one, as can be attest- 2d to by records of many other municipalities. For the Town of Whitby to set up an ambulance service, equip, maintain, and staff it with trained personnel, the cost for the first year would be far in excess of $40,000.00. This would be an additional burden on the taxpayers of Whitby. For these reasons, and others too numerous to mention here, we ask you, the Citizens of Whitby, to support us in this request.
