\ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thurdey, Mey 9, 1963 BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Industrial Show Assists Exports By. FORBES RHUDE Canadian Press Business Editor TORONTO (CP)--Side effects may be as important as the main objective at the current National Industrial Production Show. The stated main objective is to display to Canadian produ- cers new ways and new equip- ment by which they may im- prove Canadian productivity. With --_ hope - a companies in Canada, the United States, Britain, Europe, Japan and Australia, the main purpose presumably is being ac- complished. Side effects, however, became more apparent as the show goes on. One effect is that Canadian manufacturers, through contacts with foreign buyers, are get- ting new export leads. Another is that they are get- ting a chance to see what things, not now being made in Canada, may reasonably be made here. Similarly ig: manufacturers are assessing the size of the Ca- nadian market with a view to possible future assembly or manufacture in this country. A further, and perhaps more immediate effect, is that coun- tries hitherto not active in the Canadian industrial equipment market are learning about the opportunities here. SEES LACKS A French spokesman said he could see many areas where French production is not now represented in Canada, and he indicated that the French bud- get for such shows here will be increased, Poland, which this year is showing mostly small equip- ment, plans to come in greater force to the next show two years hence, and so does Czech- oslovakia. Japan, more knowledgeable in the market than some other countries, is making what is de- scribed as her "first major as- sault," in a switch away from emphasis on consumer goods. Canadian companies number about 550 out of the 1,500 repre- sented and have an impressive display of sophisticated machin- ery in a very wide range. Nevertheless there are many items which it is not practicable to make here in the foreseeable future, was opened Monday by Trade Minister Sharp and will close Friday--range from the micro- scopic to huge machines, weigh- ing tons. A listing of exhibitors fills nearly 50 pages of a one- column booklet, with products having to do with such things as stamping, slitting, shearing, cutting, pressing, fastening, hoisting, 'andling, drilling, measurin, controlling, weighing and 50 on. Norton J. Anderson, manager of Industrial and Trade Shows To date. the United States andj°f Canada, which puts on the Britain have been our chief sup-|Production Show, says that liers in such goods, Accord-| Without being canvassed a con- ding , although they don't say|Siderable number of exhibitors so, the current show and the have already renewed and in- increased competition from creased their space for the next other countries that may de- velop from it may be a worry to them. SENDS 300 In any event they are hery with strong representations--the United States with about 300 companies (apart from Cana- dian companies that are sub- sidiaries of American firms), and Britain with more than 100. A British .spokesman com- mented: 'Almost anything on display here -- we have it. Everything we are showing is already being sold in Canada, in some case through Canadian firms, but all good business can be improved and we are look- ing for expansion." Exhibits at the show--which show two years from now. He said the 1965 show would have gross space of 600,000 square feet in six buildings of the Ca- nadian National Exhibition com- pared with 400,000 square feet in four buildings this year.
