Costs Blocked Early Efforts To Lift Track By MICHAEL STARR MP The removal of the tracks on King street is an event that has been looked forward to for many years, Many civic leaders in the past have probed this possibility. They were frustrated by the costs involved and other difficul- ties were encountered. An effort was made te have the tracks removed when all wires were placed underground in the downtown area, but the compensation asked by the mer- chanis whe were served by ail tonnage hauled over these rails has decreased to an extent that the merchants being served be- came less and less dependent on awa boasted of being the. only town in North America with rail _}| service from the railway station to the hotel. As the mode of transportation changed, the same could not be claimed. But Oshawa created a nationwide reputation as the only city with railway service on its main Congratulations are due to all those who were eventually suc- cessful in bringing about the re- meval ef these historic tracks. Tracks Helped Early Growth By Mayor Lyman Gifford On May 11, 1963, the citizens of Oshawa will have arrived at a point in the progressive de- velopment of our City where the King Street car tracks will have outlived their usefulness. It is with a feeling of nostal- gia that many of us recall by- P iiciibisss THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thursdey, Moy 9, 1963] gone days when these same tracks provided a valuable ser- vice in the way of freight to the local industries, and to a lesser degree, they also provid- ed a passenger service easterly to the old Post Office, and west- rly to the Commercial Hotel. That Town of the past de- pended to a great measure on these same rails for the first link in the chain of transporta- tion which found its destination in the markets of the globe. To a great degree; the economy of that Town, in those days, de- pended on these tracks. Over the years, our mode of transportation has changed and, since satisfactory arrangements have been made with the three industries vitally concerned, we can now look forward to a look in the centre of our City.
