SS Re nmatln teat ARAOE 18 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Seturdey, March 23, 1963 TIMES HOME OF THE WEEK - Soy he} { abe Fiero Pe DESIGN No. = 487 4 rd - E + YOUR GARDEN By MARTIN VERSLUIS Preparing the soil before planting is the first and most important step, Evergreens like lots of humus and since they will be in the same place for a long time, it is necessary to pro- vide that humus before planting. Good garden loam, composed of about one-third humus in the form of well-rotted manure or peat moss or compost, to a depth of about 14 inches will get them off to a good start, and will pay off with interest in years to come. Do not leave the beds much higher than the surroundings. If they are much higher the water will run off instead of going to the roois where it is needed. Make sure you know the grow- ing habits of the different ever- greens you buy and whether they will grow satisfactorily in the location you are planning to plant them. It is not in the scope cf this article to discuss all the different varieties. I sug- gest that you take a plan of your house and grounds to a re- liable nurseryman and have him Soil, Handling Of Evergreens help you choose your plants, He is trained to assist you. Once you get your evergreens, plant them as soon as possible, just a trifle deeper than they were planted in, the nursery. Make a hole a few inches wider than the root ball. Set the plant in (do not loosen the burlap) and fill the hole with water. After the water has soaked into the soil and the root ball, you fill the hole with soil and fi it with your foot. Keep plants at least two feet away from basement walls and if possible further. At all times keep the soil moist but not soaked, A good watering before winter sets in is very good especially where there are over-hanging roofs. Keep the soil surface loose and free of weeds by cultivating once every week or ten days. This will allow air and water to penetrate freely to the roots where it is needed. At planting time there is no need for fertili- zer providing you supply good soil as mentioned before. So re- member to keep your beds well watered and cultivated and set up a. good insect and disease prevention program. This will be dealt with in a later article: Pruning Evergreens: this is another important step in keep- ing your evergreen planting NEW FREE BOOKLET 7 Ways To Hear Better If you have a severe or a slight hearing loss, whether you need a hearing aid or not, don't miss this informative new booklet. PAINT ON TRIM PEELS QUESTION: Soon after we paint the wood trim on our stuc- co house it peels off. We have tried several top quality brands, but always have the peeling paint soon afterwards. What do you' suggest? i ANSWER: The usual cause of paint peeling is moisture work- ing its way through from under- neath and pushing the paint off the surface. The trim may not be tightly joined to the stucco, or the joints of the frames themselves may have loosened, or there may be faulty window flashings. Check all these points and tightly caulk any openings, using a caulking compound and caulking gun. WAX STAIN | QUESTION: I finished a chair) with a penetrating wax stain) some time ago. Now we want) right over the stain? ANSWER: Just remove any surface wax, either with a good wax remover according to label| directions or with fine steel wool and turpentine.
