T. D. "Tommy" Thomas, ' feft, MLA for Oshawa riding, chats with Malcolm Smith, « president of Local 222, UAW- CLC, at the recent UAW. Edu- cation Seminar held in Osh awa, The picture was taken at the UAW Hail on Bond street, central gathering point for Labor activity in the City. Membership Tops 53,000 By MALCOLM SMITH President, Local 222, UAW-CLC Once agai, on behalf of our membership in Local 222 UAW, "we are happy to report a year a Santee for the past year -- This was the first full year of the operation of the contract which was signed with General Motors of Canada Ltd. and those of our members who work for' that Company reaped the bene- fits in full that were contained in the agreement, Prior to the signing of the De, cember 1961 agreement, there were, in our opinion, too many deductions from the pay cheque of the workers; almost all of them were deleted after Decem- ber 1961, the only ones left being' Income tax, Unemployment In- surance and Union Dues. This, in itself, represented a good financial gain to our members, even without taking into con- sideration the addition of the Annual Improvement Factor wage increase. GAIN INCREASES The increases gained in the _ Pension Plan in December 1961, have also had a significant ef- fect on the members who are getting up in years, and have worked many years for General Motors. The records show that we have an increasing number of our members who are retir- ing prior to the compulsory re- tirement age of 69. This, in our opinion, represents real pro- gress, because, with an in- creasing number retiring prior to attaining the compulsory re- tirement age, there are an ini- creasing number of job openings being created for younger peo- ple who are now entering the labor force of our country. We believe that if this was carried out on a much wider scale, it would lead to at least a partial solution to our serious unem- ployment problem. Dur'ng 1962 negotiations were carried on in two of the largest plants affiliated with Local 222, namely Duplate of Canada Ltd., and Houdaille Industries Ltd. These negotiations resulted in greatly improved wage rates, Pension plans, and working con- ditiens for our members who are employed by these com- panies. The final agreements that were arrived at were, in 1962 Seen As Busy Year By KEITH W. ROSS, International Representative United Steelworkers OF AMERICA I wou!d like to congratulate The Oshawa Times on its Busi- ness Review and Forecast Edi- tion which points up to its read- ers the progress in our City of Oshawa. The past year has been a largely + an economic sense, THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesday, Februcry 26, 1963 2] HELPING TO BUILD AGREATER OSHAWA momentous one, if for no other reason than the fact that the city is finally removing the eye- sore of the tracks on King street and that the job will com- mence this spring. It can also be said that pro- gress along the lines of educa- tion, welfare, health care, new buildings and expansion of busi- ness have been gratifying, sig- nifying a growing community, but there is one glaring area of limited progress, which is the almost plete lack of secur- along the lines of the agr that was concluded with General Motors in December, 1961, and in some instances even went be. yond what was achieved in G.M, in 1961 in fringe benefits. WORK CONTINUITY With regard to continuity of work, which is one of the most important aspects of the indus- trial worker's life, 1962 proved to be a real banner year. General Motors, which is the predominant industry in the city reported at the end of the year that they had broken all pre- vious records for production of automobiles and trucks, which would indicate that the vast majority of our members pro- bably broke their individual record for earnings. The same thing would, no doubt, be true of the other compnies who re under con- tract with Local 222, and who supply General Motors with parts. We also brought a mea- sure of security and progress to one of ite smaller industrial plants in' the city when we or- ganized the Algoma Steel plant, and signed a contract with them during the year. The membership of Local 222 UAW is now in excess of 13,000 which indicated a considerable amount of progress in 1962, In 1862 the Local Union con- tinued as it has done for many years, to support various sport- ing orgcnizations, not only wi- thin the city, but in some outside points where mor hockey and baseball organizations exist. We believe that these organizations should be supported to some extent, because if the younger) generation is to grow up to be the kind of citizens whom we might expect to take their place in the community in later years and be a credit to it, then 'we certa'nly have to give them this kind of support when they are in their formative years. When all of these things are added up, the sum total indi- cates that 1962 was probably the best year that this progressive City of Oshawa has ever ex- 1945 = 1963 | . B.
