In the following story, an Associated Press correspondent from Cyprus gives a blow-by-blow, quo- tation - packed account of how it was in Baghdad dur- ing the 30-hour battle which sent Abdel Karim Kassem down to defeat and death. . This is his story: Rebel forces with heavy tanks and armed personnel carriers opened their attack on Kassem's headquarters in the defence ministry compound at 9 a.m., Friday, Feb. 8. The compound is a rectangle of buildings be- side the Tigris River with a mosque attached to it. CRASH INTO BUILDING A pitchéd battle against 600 defenders continued through the day and night until revolution- ary forces crashed through into the building where Kassem dived at 11 a.m, Saturday. They first caught two generals--Sadu Medhafi, deputy governor gen- eral) and Mudir Harakat, com- imander of operations. Tanks then rolled through the tain gate and infantry drove past Kassem's apartment to the police building. They found Kassem's chief bodyguard, Gen. Wasfi Tahir, dead.
