HOCKEY SCORES STANDINGS i EDDIE POWERS quit his post as a referee in the National Hockey League yesterday -- and he just up and "quit" -- he didn't resign. The background is both brief and recent -- as nfentioned the other day, "Toe" Blake made a disparaging rémark about Powers -- two weeks later, president Clarence Campbell levies a fine of merely $200.00 and less than two days later, Powers, rated tops on the NHL referee staff, tirns in his badge. He's been one of the top law enforcers for years and No. 1 since Red Storey also called it a day, under circumstances not too dissimilar. Sure, somebody else will come along, nobody is irreplaceable but it takes a long time to acquire the skill and efficiency of officials such as Red Storey and Eddie Powers, Some who might have it, perhaps don't want the job. It has been said in hockey cor- ridors for several years that George Hayes preferred to be only a linésman and Oshawa's own Bill Morrison perhaps felt the same way. Getting very practical about it -- we think president Campbell cost the NHL some money. He could have fined "Toe" Blake more -- and got it, Now, he's going to find officials asking higher wages, to compensate "stress and strain." x x x 4 SKEET SHOOTERS of the city and area, can wend their way to the Oshawa Skeet Club on Sunday morning, 10.00 o'clock, and join in the fun and competition of a "Prize Shoot". They have some prizes donated by local merchants and the event is open to both club members and non-mem- bers. Club members will Participate on a handicap basis and non-members may decide whether to go on high gun or draw. x x x x OSHAWA GENERALS moved a big step closer to that coveted playoff berth in the OHA Junior "A" Metro League last night when they earned a 5-1 lead in the first two-thirds of the game and then hung on to win 5-3, right in Brampton. Now Generals and 7-Ups are tied for fourth place, with 25 points each and which means, they are both within five points of Knob Hill Farms and four ahead of Whitby Dunlops. That particular situation has to change tonight, but how great the change will. be and in what direction, is hard to predict. Certainly that game in Whitby tonight will be a red-hot tussle. An extremely brisk advance sale indicates they'll hang out the SRO sign tonight. Dunnies are due to take one from the Generals and since the Oshawa boys will be a little tired after last night's fray, this could be the time. Both go back at it on Sunday afternoon in Maple Leaf Gardens, with Dun- nies meeting Maroons in the opener and Generals taking on Knob Hill in the second game. Then on Monday night, it's Neil McNeil Maroons vs Oshawa Generals. in the Bowman- ville Community Arena. This, we hasten to point out, is not an exhibition game, This is a Metro League schedule game, that was previously cancelled. They'll play. it Monday, in Bowmanville, a move to give hockey fans in Oshawa and Bowmanville area a chance: to see the Junior "A" brand, close-to-home. This one should draw a big crowd. x x x x CURLING: -- As expected, Mrs. Emily Woolley's rink won their game handily yesterday at North Bay, over the Noranda rink, to clinch the Ontario Ladies' single-rink (Silver D) curling title and qualify for the Dominion Diamond D finals at St. John, N.B. . . . UPSETS dominated the play at Hamilton yesterday in the men's single-rink British Consols "eights". When the third and fourth rounds had been com- pleted, the two co-favorites, Unionville's Murray Roberts and Parkway's John Ross, had both men toppled twice, leaving Ottawa and Hanover undefeated. Then last night, Bob Mann's young Hanover rink, the surprise of the season, trailed win- less Glanford 7-4 at the end of eight ends and the biggest upset of all was looming but Hanover scored three in the 9th and came back with a big 4-count on the 10th end when Glanford skip Hyslop was short with his last rock, on a draw to the open house, Mann yielded a couple on the llth and then Hanover ran Glanford out of rocks in the final 12th. That leaves Hanover with a 5-0 record, They play Ottawa this morning and if Hanover wins this one -- nobody can catch them. Earlier yesterday Mann nosed out Murray Rob- erts of Unionville 4-3, yeah, 4-3 -- and it took a 13th end to decide it. Then Hanover beat John Ross 8-5. Ottawa beat Ross 9-6 and then nipped Roberts 10-8. But last night, Ted Smithers of Galt made a brilliant draw with his last rock, on the final end, right to the button, to nose out Bob Knipple- berg of Ottawa 10-9, to leave Ottawa 4-1. There could be a three way tie for first place at the end of today's play. Rennick counted his fourth of RICHARD LEAVES the night to accompany ensuing singles by Bud Lehman and Fred Etcher. Olympias were minus regu- lars Terry Masters, Ray Pres- ton, Junior West, Alex Wiseman and Arch Crossey.
