WHITBY And DISTRICT | CRITICISM ANSWERED Anti-Litter Bylaw To Be Enforced Recent criticism of Whitby's littered streets was answered at Friiday's special council meeting. The Streets Commit- tee brought in a report which contained a report by Town Engineer Charlies Hoag. Mr. Hoag's report read: "In view of the fact that the matter of town cleaning was referred to the Streets Com- mittee for a survey and re- port at the last courteil meet- ing, it was my opinion. that certain preliminary comments . might be valuable for commit- tee consideration relative to the recent meeting of the Chamber of Commerce. Quoting from the published) newspaper article, "The Indus- trial Commiissioner suggested a clean-up week is also a neces- sity in Whitby." It is drawn to the commit- tee's attention that a clean-up period of approximately nine days is advertised annually ap- mately on May 24 of each this fact appears local papers. During this clean-up period, the Whitby Sanitary Land Fill Area is open on two successive weekends and is supervised in order to permit weekend dump- ing. In addition, double garbage collection is put on during the entire clean-up period and the additional men and _ vehicles on the road pick up material discarded during the clean-up in household furniture. Apparently, those at the Chamber of Commerce were un- aware of this well established policy in Whitby. Quoting again from the pub- lished article, '"'The Industrial Commissioner said trash con- tainers are needed in the down- town area." Trash containers have been maintained in the downtown area for some 7n- siderable period by the Works Department, These include one at each of the four corners at xi The advertisment, advertising the intersection of Dundas and EDWARD IS Edward William, ten-month- old son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Again those at the meeting were apparently unaware of this since no com- ment was made on the existing trash containers. Relative to the generalized comments concersing the lit- tered streets and broken glass, it might be well to point out to the committee that gutters in the downtown area are swept regularly between midnight and a.m, on a daily sweeping pro- gram, § effective from an appear- ance viewpoint as it might be as by the time the majority of people frequent the <dow:- town streets, many merchants have swept out their stores and store fronts into the newly cleaned gutters.
