_ FIRST AlD TO THE AILING HOUSE By ROGER C. WHITMAN -- PAINT ION: The previous owners painted the brick fire- place in the living room. We prefer the natural brick appear- "ance. How can we remove the * paint? ANSWER: Because of the porous nature of brick, com- plete removal of the paint coat- ing is difficult and frequently impossible. The best method is to have the paint sandblasted off by a building cleaning con- tractor, (consult the classified telephone directory). Or try the following which is sometimes successful: Make a thick paste of liquid paint remover and powdered whiting. Apply thick- ly over the brick and leave until dry; then scrape off. Re- peated treatments sometimes result in perfect removal; other times, less successful. FLOOR PROBLEM QUESTION: I had uneven floors in my business place agd it was in need of new linoleum, $o I nailed down masonite first then laid the linoleum. Now I have linoleum bulges. I did not cement or nail the linoleum to the masonite. What would be| the best way to correct ths problem? ANSWER: General principle|* to follow is to work linoleum} adhesive under the the bulges, slice across each raised section, insert ddhesive| through the ,slit and on the| underside of the linoelum. Press| back in position and weigh| down until dry. Wipe up any cement oozing up through the slit, to prevent its hardening and staining surface, WALL FABRIC ADHESIVE QUESTION: Before 1 at. tempt covering some walls in a summer cottage (I would like to linoleum} everywhere possible. To flatten| use burlap or somewhat simi- lar fabric), I would like to know if there is any risk of the adhesive coming loose ia cold weather? Later on I plan to con- vert this cottage to year-round retirement use, 80 any repairs will be permanent. ANSWER: If the present wall is adequately cleaned and sized, there is no reason to expect a good adhesive to come loose just because it is cold. REMOVING SPRAY COATING QUESTION: We would like to know if there is anything on the market to remove spray e1a- mel paint from a refrigerator door, also a stove? When this was 'applied, the underneath sur- face was good. By this I mean there were no chips, etc. If this can be removed, will it have any effect as far as discolora- tion? ANSWER: For vertical sur- faces, paste type paint re- mover is the easiest to use. Work in small sections, off the remover as soon as the sprayed coat begins to soften (to avoid exposing baked-on factory finish). Working quick- ly and in small sections, you jean control the risk of dis- coloring the origi inal finish, NAIL POLISH ON TABLE 10P | QUESTION: A botfle of nail polish was accidentally knock- ed over on a wood end table and some of it spilled and hard- | taking}, Buying or Selling ! } GUIDE REALTY LTD. @ DICK YOUNG Vice-President | PHONE 723-1121 @ LLOYD CORSON, President }) @ LUCAS PEACOCK Sec-Treas. |} 16 SIMCOE ST. BUILDING CARPORT QUESTION: We would like to} apart and embedded in a two by two feet frost line, would be sufficient. However, this may be overbuilding. Architect's are beyond our budget. ANSWER: If you are not pian- ning a big production, and the carport to provide only a reasonable amount of protec- tion, you can eliminate the extra effort of the two by two foot concrete piers below the frost line. Ordinary post con- struction should suffice, sink- ing them solidly below ground. Metal pipes should be .primed and treated with rust - ing paint.
