They speak of him with affectionata irrever- ence, The Pope, who strolls about freely:and often goes to church in the poor quarter of Rome, is a@ chubby, grandfatherly figure with twinkling eyes and a mouth always ready for laughter. He has the head of a noble senator from imperial Rome. He has remained doggedly him- self since his appointment to succeed the late Pius XII Oct. 28, 1958. Pius was ascetic, thin-faced, tristocratic, austere. Pope John is of t origin and his brothers still till the fields near Bergamo in northern Italy. The late Pope spoke copybook French; Pope John's $8 8 8 +% 350 350 4350 4+10 8 Ke 1% lle + % Ne are sometimes slurred and his emphasis is pastoral rather than intellectual. HAS 'OPENED WINDOWS' His great contribution, a Vati- can authority said, is that he has "opened the windows" and allowed fresh breezes to blow through the sometimes musty corridors of the church of Rome. Pope John radiates a simple, all - enveloping warmth, His|and broad smile seems to everyone. He is spontaneous and sincere, and he is fond of mak- ing jokes. Two Canadian _ bishops chuckled as they passed on to a reporter little stories of a hu- morous nature recounted by the Pope. "He has tremendous personal- ity,'"' said a man who has talked with him. "It is almost a physi- cal thing. Though not tall, he is a large man, and he seems to throw his whole body into his conversations." GENERAL HEALTH GOOD He will be 81 Nov. 25. He suf- fers from occasional minor complaints but his general] health is good and his vigor is remarkable. This was shown in his recent extraordinary whistle-stop tour of Loreto and Assisi when he stood at train windows for long periods without any sign of fatigue. Similarly he has moved easily through the exacting cer- emonies of the first week of the ecumenical council. He is immensely popular, at home and abroad. Perhaps there are some: dissenters. At a dinner party outside Rome, this reporter found a certain reti- cence, an indication that some older Romans would perhaps prefer a more dignified and withdrawn personality. To outside observers, it seems almost an understatement to say that if the Roman Catholic Church needed a figure with something of a public relations flair, it could hardly have picked a better man than Pope John.
