"You'll see a different kind of rugby, particularly in our ball handling," said Dick Ellis, of Victoria, coach of the 26-man team, at a press conference Fri- day night. "Canada is so close to the United States that we sort of follow Americans in our pass- Most of the players are from British Columbia. Six are from Ontario, four from Quebec and one from Alberta. Fifteen are Canadian - born. The rest are from Britain, New Zealand, Australia and South Af- rica. "We play a weird sort of game," Ellis said. "A little bit of the South African style, a bit of British, and a lot of our own. You must forgive us if we keep giving South African or New Zealand names to the posi- tions and plays." ing. We hope to play as wide open and attractive a game as Possible." The Canadians, sponsored by the rugby unions of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales, will play their opening match Oct: 13 at Exeter in Devon. They will have 17 games in all. "The last Canadian team played here in 1902," Ellis said. "There was a team set to come in 1939 but the war prevented that. Finally we've made it." The average age of the team fs 30. Captain D. L. (Buzz) Moore, veteran forward nrom + Vancouver, is 41. British sports writers were surprised at the age of the amateur players. "Rugby isn't a game you start playing early in Canada," explained Ellis. 'Boys in ordi- Mary schools play American football and baseball and often don't start playing rugger until they're 18 or 19.
