Wallis of Manitoba sent a box- car rolling down the "hump" Tuesday to mark the official open of the Canadian Na- tional Railways' new $23,000,000 Symington freight classification yard. Donald Gordon, CNR presi- dent, told government, civic and business officials at the opening ceremony the yard, "one of the most. modern 'n the world," was a result of the railway's "constant search for better transportation service." Dr. John Nelson Senn, super- jintendent of the Ontario Hos- pital at Hamilton, said he found Fawcett believed that provincial police and Jocal authorities who had attempted to enforce the tax laws were persecuting him and that he was justified in re- foe their attempts. As each car arrives in the yard--which covers 628 acres and is 2% miles long and one- half mile wide--its initials and number are monitored on closed-circuit television. RECORD ON DISC At the same time the infor- mation is recorded on a mag- netic disc which is checked against lists received hours be- fore from the train's point of origin. After inspection the train is taken to the "hump", a man- made hill 32 feet above ground level, over which the cars are pushed--one at a time--rolling to their designated tracks with the aid of automatic switches. Once the cars are in motion an automatic computer meas- ures their speed so they will reach their destination at the right speed for a gentle coup ling. The new yard contains 108 miles of track with a capacity of 6,927 cars and its floodlight- ing system uses enough energy to supply a community of about 11,000 people. The yard has about 700 em- ployees, excluding train and en-| gine crews. GLECOFF SUPERMARKET 174 RITSON RD, S. OSHAWA, ONT.
