Labor Lack May Affect Apple Crop PORT HOPE -- . "The million dollar apple crop of Durham and Ontario Counties is threat-|® ened by, a shortage of fruit pickers, says John Ingratta, fruit and vegetable specialist of the Ontario Department of Agri- culture for Dufham and Ontario Counties. Major reason for the labor shortage is the call-back to work at Goodyear and General Motors plants in Bowmanville and Osh- awa. "The shortage is not acute and may not prove detriment- al," said Mr. Ingratta, "Most growers are satisfied to pick the apples (mostly McIntosh) at their present slow rate, but heavy winds could fell enough apples to cause thousands of dollars of damage'. If winds remain fairly light, the apples will remain undamag- ed on trees for another week to 10 days, he added. The spys will remain on the trees until about Oct. 7. Moderately strong winds will not bother these until they have ripened. Durham and Ontario counties are x tdpeo k(cte are expected to harvest about) 300,000 bushels of apples this year. This is down 10 percent from last year and is on par with most of Ontario. LOW HARVEST This relatively low harvest has given optimism to most growers particularly in view of the ex- pected high quality of the yield. Mr. Ingratta attributed much of the success to insect and disease bei programs of the farm- rs. The department of agricul. peed informs the farmers by letter as to the proper Fog for spraying. The program this saw e farmers using it to 16 différent sprays from May to August. A second reason tor a good yield this year is the early sea- son that has been experienced said Mr. Ingratta. The apples are usually ripe at about mid- September, but this gf they were ready about Sept. 7, Most farmers left them on trees until the usual harvest in order to further improve color. "The crop is not as plentiful as it could have been," remark- ed Mr. Ingratta, "but it's of a higher than normal quality." LARGER YIELD The Northumberland County apple crop is expected to be of a 'similar quality, but with a much larger yield, said the fruit and vegetable specialist. Marketing was a slight prob- lem last year, he said, but it is expected that the 10 percent reneral crop reduction will re- lieve any difficulties this year. Some local growers, however, have expressed a fear of a flood of apples from Quebec province, wherv the crop has been increas- ed by a yield of extremely large apples. The possibility of having water core problem may per- suade Quebec farmers to at- tempt a high-volume sale on Ontario's fresh apple market, he added. 290 LaSalle Avenue. 728-7257. 1960 VOLKSWAGEN, good condition, $1000.
