Rackham of in the pulpit with our Gary Residents Send Coconuts To Kennedy GARY, Ind. (AP)--Gary citi- zens with complaints about lo- cal "crime and corruption" are mailing coconuts to President Kennedy, hoping they'll get at- tention by reviving memories of a wartime legend. The Glen Park Citizens Asso- ciation touched off the barrage of coconuts, bearing such mes- sages as, 'Friendly natives in Gary need help." "We'll keep sending coconuts until we get a federal: investi- gation of the city administra- tion and schools," said William Mackowiak, publicity chief of the community association, "Lo- cal officials don't want to co- operate." Mackowiak noted the story that the president, during the Second World War, once sent a «,)cocunut afloat from a Pacific Island where his PT-boat crew was stranded carrying the mes- sages, "Friendly natives, help!" MAYOR CHARGED Mayor George Chacharis of Gary and others face trial on an indictment charging evasion of federal income taxes on al- leged kickbacks from firms do- ing business with the elty.
