Ye she made it only as an alternate on Can- ada's British Empire Games team. She has had to practise 10- metre diving from the tower of an old windmill because there isn't a proper platform in this go | Part of the country. She had only one day of train- ing from a platform before go- ing to the U.S. indoor cham- pionships and came home black and blue but with a silver medal for finishing second. And in Vancouver the straps of her bathing suit broke dur- ing a difficult dive and she had to be escorted to the dressing room in a towel. She returned undisturbed to win the last dive and take the Canadian title. With all this, 98-pound Judy, who stands slightly less than five feet, is not bitter. "Tl just have to work that much harder," she says, "'Per- haps I could make the 1963 Pan- American and 1964 Olympic team." COURAGE AND PATIENCE Her coach, Don Webb, was philosophical when it was learned Judy would probably not be going to Perth, Australia, for the B.E. Games. "The association has only so much money and a trip to Aus- tralia is quite expensive. It's un- 29/ fortunate, because I feel Judy could have returned with a medal." Miss Stewart started diving a little more than two years ago and even her coach concedes she "looked awful." Working five days a week' }and three hours a day, Judy | ade rapid progress. "She has courage, patience " Webb says, and it's evident from the deter-| mination she applied to gaining skills in the 10-metre dive. | "There is an old windmill in |Picton, Ont., with a homemade| tower which 10) m isn't quite [cleats high.
