On Long Hunt For 'Joy Town' ROME (AP) -- Archeologists are on a long hunt for ancient Sybaris, the "'joy town' that was danced to doom 2,500 years ago by its music-loving horses Italian scientists have been convinced for nearly two years that they have located in the heel of Italy the site of the an- cient Greek colony whose riot- ous ways made Sybarife a syn- onym for voluptuous living. But digging has gone slowly. A team of University of Pennsylvania archeologists is expected to take part in the search with modern sounding equipment which Italians say will facilitate the excavation. Sybaris, founded by the Achaean Greeks in 720 BC, was the envy of poorer, harder working colonies. Its champions won laurels in the Olympic Games. Its banquets were sod- den with fine wines, groaning with rich foods and gay with music and dancing. They lasted until dawn and the Sybarites slept off their stupor until sunset while slaves did the work, forbidden on pain of death to make any noise that would awaken the nightly cele- brants. HAD. FINE CAVALRY Even so, Sybaris boasted the finest cavalry of any Greek colony. The Sybarites loved their horses so well they brought them along to the nightly revel- ries and taught them to dance to music. All this was envied, espe- cially by the neighboring rival city of Croton. So the Croton- ians finally plotted to take Sy- baris by surprise. The Croton- ian infantry marched to the as- sault in the morning, when the Sybarites were dull with drink and weariness. But the slaves gave the alarm} and the famed Sybarite cavalry} thundered out, hastily mus- tered, confident of beating off the attack. But Crotonian infan- try ranks opened and out stepped a military band. It broke into the music to which the Sybarites had trained their horses to dance. The cavalry charge broke up in chaos as the war horses danced and pirouetted to the tune. And so the Crotonians cap- tured the city, enslaved the men, carried off the women and diverted the nearby Crati River from its course so its waters would cover Sybaris and hide it forever. SEACLIFFE FANCY TOMATO ..., JUICE By JULES LOH WEST WINFIELD, Pa. (AP)| Eighty acres of subterranean rooms and corridors spread be- neath the hills hereabouts, and workers wearing helmets fitted with lamps load their appointed 15 tons of mushrooms a day. Under this western Pennsyl- vania town is the mother lode of the U.S. mushroom industry: The Butler County Mushroom! Farm. Mushrooms require a _ con- stant springtime temperature (btween 50 and 62 degrees) and a comfortable humidity (about 70 per cent) which they find at times under a fallen tree limb or a pile of dead leaves, but which makes growing them in commercial quantities some- what difficult. M. S. Yoder and his brother Ira, a couple of Barberton, Ohio, chrysanthemum growers, fig- ured a cave came closer than anything else to providing a good mushroom climate. They sent out a scout, and in 1937 located an abandoned lime stone mine with a year-round temperature of 56 degrees, a constant 68-per-cent humidity, and 15 miles of broad tunnels 14 feet high to work in, It took the Yoders about 15 years to work out all the diffi- culti es, such as air circulation, but by now the Butler operation turns out the lion's share among the 760 growers in 23 states of the U.S. who produce 125,000,000 pounds of mushrooms annually. Only two other growers in the U.S. use abandoned mines to grow mushrooms. The custom- ary method is to produce them in cinder block houses where the temperature is controlled artifici ally.
