"It's passed the critical stage," says Roger Larivee, a baldish man of 41 with a string of 27 fighters, five of them pros. "Thugs and racketeers mus- cled in. Now they're being rooted out. Slowly boxing is coming back. With shows on a regular basis, the competition will become more intensive." Larivee, coach of Canada's last Olympic boxing team, lays down hard-line no-nonsense pol- icy with his kids. "If they don't want to listen, I leave them alone until they're calmly on the ring apron chew- ing gum, Then when the round is over he delivers his instruc- tions in soft, unruffled tone. Three of the five members of the 1960 Olympic team came up under Larivee, a onetime pro boxer who worked as a grocery clerk and butcher before join- inr the Montreal Transportation Commission 15 years ago. They were Barbados - born Jeff Alleyne, 23, a teletype me- chanic, Gaby Mancini, 21, a stockroom clerk, and Marcel Bellefeuille, 21, an apprentice electrician. Mancini turned professional this year as a lightweight with Roger as manager.
