McINTYRE HOOD Speecial London, England Correspondent to The Times LONDON -- The golden era for soccer football players ush- ered in with the 1961-1962 sea- gon lias turned to ashes for one of the oldest clubs in England. The first club to beconie a cas- ualty of higher pay demands and lower attendances is Ac- crington Stanley, which 74 years ago was one of the found- er clubs of the English League With two months of the season still to go. this fine old club has been forced into liquidation no more games will be played on its ground. The record of the games it has played in the fourth division up to the present stage of the season will be scrubbed out and the English league secretarial is trying to arrange transfers for its play ing staff Accrington Stanley are ted to have liabilities amounting to close to £175,000. For weeks its directors have been paying the players wages out of their own pockets. It has been impos- sible to make ends meet with attendances this season averag ing 2300, and for the last home game down to 1400 Yet with the coming of the so-called golden era some of the players were drawing over $100 a week which is good money for the fourth division, especially for a club which has been - at bottom of the league table near ly all season OTHERS IN PERIL While the Accri apite of its long and honorable repor- the gton club jcome a ,iball club to be- victim of the higher costs and lower attendances there are others which are not far from being in the same plight. They are kept solvent only because their supporters' clubs, through football pools and other devices, keep them sup- plied with money. If they had to depend on the gate receipts alone, they would have had to go out of business long ago Accrington suffered because it was ringed around with top level clubs, such as Blackburn, Burnley, Preston, Bolton and with Manchester and Liverpool within easy distance. Its for- mer supporters now get into their cars or hop the bus to see first o rsecond division football rather than the fourth division brand served up at Accrington. The club was founded in 1876 and in 1888 became one of the original members of the Foot League, In 1893 the name was changed to Accrington Stan- ley. From 1893 until the first world. war they played in the Lancashire League and re joined the league in the Third Division Northern Section when it was formed in 1921. Its best performances have been to be runners-up to the champions of that division in 1955 and 1958, history, is the first SHOCK TO SOCCER The announcement that Ac crington has been forced to give up its losing financial battle has come as a shock to the 'soccer world. The question now being asked Which football club will be Perhaps by the end of the season other the next to go? division clubs will be counted out. Clubs like Chester, Hartlepools, Chesterfield, Don caster and Stockport are in dan ger of having to apply for re- election to the fourth division And there are some eager clubs, like Bath City, Oxford United, Guildford and others which have good support in the Southern League, stepping up to take their places fourth The players thought the milen- nium had come when the ceiling was taken off their wages. But many of them are going to find that their clubs cannot carry the burden of the increased salaries any longer, and I quite a cleanout of players in the lower brackets of football after the present season is end ed. And it would not be surpris- ing if some clubs other than Accrington Stanley will be sat isfied to call it a day Tony Chibi Ready Defend 5-Pin Title ST.
