14 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Thuredoy, February 15, 1962 SPORTS OUTDOORS By Jack Sords W. Germany's | Skiers Almost Miss Big Meet WARSAW (CP) -- West Ger- many's team was almost forced to withdraw from the 1962 world nordic ski championships due to start in Poland's Tatra Moun- tains Saturday because team members lacked smallpox vac- cination certificates. In a compromise hurriedly worked out, the West Germans will remain under close medical supervision and will be billeted with Canadian, East German and U.S. teams. The West German team of 28 men and women arrived Tues- day without the certificates. Smallpox recently had been re- ported in West Germany. Polish authorities insisted that all West Germans not vaccin- ated since 1960 must get anti- -ismallpox shots at the airport. Dr. Fridy Stober, the team leader, refused to comply and said "we will withdraw-from the championships." Polish ski officials, after nearly three hours of frantic phone ¢alls, found the compro- mise, CANADA OUTDOORS Hungarian Partridge Thrived In Alberta EDMONTON (CP)--How can | little bird from Europe sur- vive an Alberta winter night at '40 degrees below zero? The way of the Hungarian partridge is to eat a lot and 'sleep close to its friends. This is one of the findings of 'Dr. Kaj Westerskov, chief biolo- tgist of the New Zealand inter- 'mal affairs department wildlife 'division, who is in Edmonton 'for a year to study the bird. Dr. Westerskov already has 'written several papers on the 'popular. game bird which he 'has studied in Europe and the United States. Dr. Westerskov says he is 'particularly interested in the ungarian partridge in Alberta 'because it has done so well 'here. The bird has become one of 'the most popular game birds 'and is considered a delicacy by Alberta hunters. ' Flushed from a field of stub- ble by a stalking hunter or dog ft makes a jet - propelled take- ' off and is a challenge to a quick aim before it disappears over a knoll, lands and scurries along the ground for cover. The bird has an in - flight speed ap- proaching 30 miles an hour. "The partridges which were liberated at Calgary in 1908 were a classic case of game introduction," Dr. Westerskov says. "The Prairies have since become the best area in North America for the bird, though thousands have been introduced elsewhere." Three years ago, Dr. Wester- skov introduced the partidge to New Zealand, flying in the eggs. Many were misled by the Sea- son change and began breeding too early. Another 500 adult birds have since been liberated in the islands. LIVES ON GROUND Dr. Westerskov says Alberta is ideally suited to the bird, which lives on the rather in trees, and prefers flat, cleared land. It grows to about 14 ounces on a diet of seeds, insects and greenstuff, thriving on the waste grain and weed seeds of Alberta's farm fields. Alberta's comparatively light snowfall also helps the part- | Offers Floyd : Guarantee For ' Cleroux Bout MONTREAL (CP) -- Stan Weston, New York publisher, 'said Monday night a $300,000 of- fer has been made to Floyd Patterson's handled for a sum- mer title bout here between the 'world heavyweight champion 'and Montreal's Bob Cleroux, 'Canadian titleholder. » Weston said the offer'was dis- 'cussed in New York a few days .ago between Cleroux's co - man- 'ager, Al Bachman, and Charlie C , @n associate of Cus "Amato, Patterson's m: 18. month after the Montreal Ath- letic Commission suspended the' licence of Eddie Quinn for call- ing off a scheduled bout be- tween Cleroux and Archie Moore because of poor advance ticket sale. A suspension imposed against Cleroux by the Ontario Athletic Commission last month has been recognized by the National Boxing Association although he is ranked No. 7 among the con- tenders in the NBA's latest rat- ings and fifth by Ring maga- zine. The suspension was for failure to live up to a con- tract calling for a return with Toronto's George Chuvalo, whom Cleroux stripped of the crown here last Aug. ' The $300,000 would be put up 'by Weston's magazine, Boxing Illustrated, as a guarantee to 'Patterson's camp. Cleroux's cut was not disclosed. Weston indicated he plans to move into boxing promotions in HOTSPUR LOSES PRAGUE, Czec hoslovakia (AP) -- Dukla of Prague de- feated Tottenham Hotspur of England 1-0 Wednesday in the first leg of their European Soc- Montreal, a field left open. last cer Cup quarter-final. ridge, for its food supply is not hopelessly buried in winter.
