A worship service in keeping with the] |Christmas scene was conducted by Nona and Bev Davis and} CHERRY GETS CHOPPED What a shame! -- the closely guarded secret held by Whitby Mohawk manager Ivan Davie, that his coach Bob Cherry was fired over the weekend, seeped through to those who shout. informed of such matters. If it wasn't for our reliable source of in- formation, we might still be ignorant of this startling development, After hearing of the firing we con- tacted manager Davie and president Joe Luke. Luke was non-committal, and was apparently as surprised as anyone to read about the dismissal in yesterday's edition of the Globe and Mail. We'll bet in explain- ing the reason for giving Cherry the axe Davie said, "The executive had been displeased with Bob's work for quite sometime and as manager of the club, I felt it was time to make a change. The executive were unhappy about the way Bob handled his formations of forward lines, continually making changes, and even putting defencemen up front." Continued Davie, "I got the impression from the executive's expressions that if we continued along the same lines, that my job would also be in jeopardy." MOHAWES JUST AVERAGE But lad,ies and gentlemen, let's face facts. Re- gardless of who replaces Cherry, the Whithy Mo- hawks are not going to set the Metro Junior "A" league on fire. They are just an average hockey club with no super-stars. Their .500 won-lost record (excluding last night's encounter) is a true indication of their strength. The Mohawks lost by four and six goal margins to St. Michael's College Majors, which is about the actual difference between the two clubs. They made a creditable showing against the Toronto Marlboros, splitting two games. Whitby have han- led Unionville capably on two occasions. The only real basis for alarm was an 11-3 loss to Brampton. But those trouncings happen to the best of hockey officials, We feel the Mohawk players redeemed themselves to Cherry (if he was to blame) by winning 8-4 over the same club a few days later in Whitby: CHERRY'S SUCCESSOR BEWARE! To our knowledge there are no miracle workers on earth -- despite Oral Roberts' proclamations, Or in other words, you can't get blood out of a stone. Toe Blake, probably the most successful hockey coach in the past few years, wouldn't have meritted a sniff of the Stanley Cup if it hadn't been for the Canadiens' managerial staff, who gathered together such a collection of hockey greats. But it's the same old story in any sporting circles -- when the going gets rough, the coach is generally the fall guy! The next gentleman who takes over the coaching reins (pity the poor chap) hadn't better lose a couple in a row, or he's liable to get the old heave-ho also. Stay tuned for the next exciting chapter in the life and legend of the Whitby Mohawks. How about yours truly for coach, Ivan? DAVIE ACCEPTS DUAL ROLE TOWN AND COUNTRY .. . Cherry's successor hasn't been named as yet, but two or three are under consideration. Until one is chosen, Ivan Davie will assume the dual role . We were unable to contact Bob Cherry for comment at time of writ- ing, but our reliable source said that he was quite surprised and disappointed when informed of his being let go....
