For the 15th year in succession, a giant tree has been cut from a forest near Oslo, and shipped to London for erection on Tra- falgar Square. This tree is sent each year from Oslo to London as a token of the gratitude of the people of Norway to the people of Britain. Brilliantly decorated and illuminated, with a beautiful nativity scene erect- ed at the foot of it, this tree has made Trafalgar Square the pre-Christmas rendezvous, every evening, of thousands of Lon- doners and visitors to the city. PAID FOR BY OSLO Not only do the people of Oslo send this tree to London, but they pay the transport and érection charges. Until last a year, the council of Oslo also received, and paid, an account Tree From Oslo Square Feature that item of cost. Even at that, it costs the people of Oslo over $1000 to have the tree cut, ship- ped to London and erected. Last year, by an unfortunate circumstance, when the tree was being unloaded from the steamer which brought it from Norway, the top of it was broken off. But within a few days, another tree had been sent from Oslo to take its place and it was erected on time. CENTRE OF MUSIC Once erected, the tree is the centre of pre-Christmas observ- ances in the heart of London. On the evening when its illum- inations are turned on, it is tradtional for a choir of Nor- wegian residents of London to provide the first program of Christmas carols. Ther every evening, until Christmas Eve, choirs from different London churches take over the leading of the singing of the carols, in which they are joined nightly by crowds of from two to five thousand people. waste basket, able.
