THE OSHAWA TIMES, Wednesday, November 15, 1961 Poor Brakes Cost Woman $25, Costs BOWMANVILLE _ Helen Maclhend, of urtice, was fined $25 or five days in jail, after being con- victed of- careless driving, in Bowmanville Magistrate's Court Tuesday L. E. Laybourne, of Toronto, told Magistrate R. B. Baxter he was driving west in the driving lane of Highway 401, when he came into collision with a vehicle that had been eastbound on the highway and had turned north to enter Courtice road. "Although the vehicle came in front of me at a slow-speed, I had no chance to avoid hitting i", Mr. Daybourne testified. "Her brake pedal went right down to the floor and I could smell brake fluid', said the investigating Ontario Provincial Police Officer. This was supported by the accused, who added she felt her brakes failing near the Pickell's Road cut-off, but that she felt she could make the Courtice road turn in safety. "Instead of. making that turn across the highway why didn't you ease the car onto the shoulder and switch the motor off?," enquired the magistrate. "I didn't think of it', replied Mrs. MacLeod. In convicting, Magistrate Bax- ter concluded that had the brakes failed suddenly there would not have been a conviction. Baxter said of the fast "lapping" trucker, "only Stirling Moss in a Jaguar could have gone around the village faster". The magistrate told the ac- cused Tuesday he would not touch his licence, and snapped: "But Iam not going to wait for this money forever while you payi t in installments. I consider this sentence very lenient'"'. Jakeman returned to court within 20 minutes with the money. 2-Car Collision Draws $25 Fine BOWMANVILLE (Staff) -- Leslie Hofvath, of 60 Scugog street, Bowmanville, was fined $25 or seven days in jail in Bowmanville Magistrate's Court Tuesday, after pleading not guilty to a charge of careless driving Sept. 24. Davidson Hits TV In Canada NEW YORK (CP) -- Former Canadian TV star Joyce David- son told a U.S. audience Tues- day night that the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation de- fies its performers to become stars. Miss Davidson, assistant to host Mike Wallace on the late- night TV show PM East, said she left the CBC because she had gone as far as she could go on Canadian TV. She made the comments dur- ing an -interview Wallace was conducting with David Walker, program organ'zer of public af- fairs for the CBC, Walker ap- peared on PM East primarily to explain the workings of the CBC, Asked by Wallace whether the CBC had developed any big- name stars, Walker said Cana- dian TV does have stars--but not of the "glamor" type. The CBC, he said, is more like a repertory theatre, in which everyone plays a minor role. But Miss Davidson inter- rupted to say "The CBC defies one to become @ star." Walker replied that Joyce herself had become a star via Canadian TV and that this gave her the opportunity to move into U.S, television. _ ALLGOOD, SMOKED, SLICED, RINDLESS SIDE BACON LEAN BOILING CUTS '7 eww wwwrrewwrvreewy BRISKET PLATE : 25.
