@ THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesday, November 14, 1961 Duke of Edinburgh H&S Has Growing Membership in S-East The Duke of Edinburgh Home and School Association has com- pleted another successful year, during which time there was a fairly good representation of parents attending our meetings. Our membership last year num- bered 93. W have had excellent co-operation from our teachers and from our principal Mr. E. Kelvin James. -, Our regular mcctings are held on the first Tuesday of each month and executive meetings are held cn the Monday after- noon preceding the regular meeting. During the year there was a Church and School week. held during October 10 through 16. In November Open House was held and there was an excellent attendance of parents. There was a radio presented to the school, and a generous donation for refugees was also given. In December a Christmas Party was held, and the children all received ice cream, and they also gave and received a gift from a member of their class. Proceeds from the tea jar were sent to the Federation for the Curtis Memorial Library. An- other accomplishment was to secure an adult guard for the corner crossing of Wilson road ' south and Hoskins Avenue. A ' skating party was held in Jan- uary and was enjoyed by all those attending. In February there was a candy sale which was very successful. In March there was a bake sale after the regular meeting. Mr. A. S. Win- ter, leaying for another school, and Mrs. Winter were: given a farewell . arty at a regular meei- ing. Flowers were presented to Mrs. Winter. Moring; treasurer, Mrs. V. Claus; corresponding sect., Mrs. J.Mark; executive members: Mrs. D. Lownie, Mrs. L. Gould- burn, Mrs. N. Dolick, Mrs. J. McPhee. St. Stephen's Mission Circle The Mission Circle is a group of young women, furmed, under the leadership of Mrs. David Duchemin, as a Missiona Group. The Study Book is used; with discussion on each chapter. Articles are made and donated to missionary homes. Layettes are made and given to hospitals on the mission field. Cards and flowers are sent to the sick, and other groups of Mission Circle girls are invited tc meetings where Missionary films are shown, or_ returned Missionaries are heard. The Rally of the Mission Cir- cles of Oshawa was held at St. Stephen's. On Youth Sunday, the Mission Circle took part in the service. Mrs. C. E. Appleyard became the first president and held of- fice for two years. The object of the Guild was to contribute furniture, drapes and other furnishings to make the chureh (then a structure of a basement only) more comfortable and in- viting. Now 18 years liater, Christ Churct is a very beauti- ful building with a large parish hall and several large assembly rooms, including a r-ost modern kitchen. The Group has donated many beautiful and useful articles in- eluding the needlepoint Com- munion Rail Kneelers, worked in church emblems. The Guild also combines with the other church groups for larger expenditures. | an The Guild derives its funds from its vvery popular Easter bridge, as well as teas, bazaars, rummage sales and various oth- er projects, including wedding receptions. The presidents throughout the years have been: Mrs. C. E. Appleyard, 1943-45; Mrs. Gordon Summers, 1945-50; Mrs. Avern Taylor, 1950-53; Mrs. H. A. Lawrence, 1953-55; Mrs. Fred Lloyd, 1955-57; Mrs. R. H. Broadbent, 1957-59 and for 1960- 62 Mrs. George Fletcher. During the year the Guild be- came affiliated with the Wo- man's Auxiliary, though still re- taining its former name.
