4 THE OSHAWA TIMES, Tuesdoy, October 24, 1961 Legion Is Solidly Built Around Spiritual Life What are the duties of the Chaplain? The Ceremony of the Instdlla- tion of Officers sets forth the following: "'In you, our Chap- lain, is vested the spiritual leadership of this Branch. You will, I know, bring dignity and respect to your office. "You should be in close confi- dence with the President and ether officers and should attend all meetings of the Branch. You should be ready to take your part in dedicatory or memorial services, and at funerals of your comrades. Into your keep- ing we place the spiritual well- being of this Branch." We remember not only those who have died in the service of their country and for the bless- ings of freedom and peace, but also those left dependent, and those who still suffer from hon- erable wounds and disabilities. As we served our country under arms, so we seek to serve in civilian life, in every good work which will make our coun- try strong in Justice, Honor and Truth. The spiritual life of the Legion is the real foundation upon which it builds. It is a mistake to think of the Royal Canadian Legion as a sort of club having little if any meaning beyond its organization. The freedom we enjoy, is one of the inherited benefits passed on to us by those who counted not their lives dear unto them- selves. It is absurd to think that we exist as an organization merely to perpetuate memories of the days of war. Rather, the REV. A. WOOLCOCK Chaplain, Legion has cause to deplore the ravages of war, and longs for lasting peace. At this time, I wish to appeal to the commun- ity as a whole to realize our common blessings and heritage purchased for us by the sacri- CONGRATULATIONS LEGIONNAIRES BRUCE R. Please, do not regard the thirty-fifth anniversary of Le- gion work in Oshawa as some- thing of concern only to the Branch. As we are members one of another, so we all share in the benefits of our country. It is a privilege to be the Chaplain of Branch 43. The Branch is well ordered and the comradeship sincere. Members who are ill in the local hospital, at Sunnybrook, or at home, are net forgotten as they are visited often. We close our meetings with the well known words: 'Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet, Lest we forget, Lest we forget." May we never forget Him, and as we endeavor to serve God and our fellows, so shall we go forward in freedom and in honor. Rev. A. Woolcock, CD, Chaplain, Branch 43, Royal Canadian Legion, OSHAWA. Horton Photo Pilgrimage Planned Under the auspices of the Royal Canadian Legion this year's Remembrance pilgrim- age to the Cenotaph and service promises to be one of the most impressive in recent years. Units from all veterans' groups in the city, headed by the Ontario Regiment, will pa- rade to the Cenotaph to pay the city's respects to those who served and made the supreme sacrifice in World War I, World War Il and Korea. For this occasion the Commanding Offi- cer of the Ontario. Regiment, Lt.-Col. Warnica, has given his permission for the band and Coronation Trumpets to be on parade.. This day, November 11, is the one day set aside to remind us of those comrades who gave their lives, so that we who are left, may have a better world to live in. Their sacrifice will ever inspire us to labor on. They shall grow not old, As we that are left grow old; - Age shall not weary them, Nor the years condemn; At the going down of the sun And in the morning, We shall remember them. _ =f coe FOUTUUOOOOUCTOUGOGOOOTGGOOOOOOTOEOEUTTTUAY era 111 ae « setting BEST 16 CELINA STREET FOR CONTINUED SUCCESS Opel Omit ca CANADIAN LEGION » « » serving unselfishly - « « helping those in distress a record to be proud of, AT THIS TIME, MARKING THE 35TH ANNIVERSARY OF OSHAWA BRANCH 43, WE EXTEND OUR...
