Ghatter Castor Review, June, 1982 3 Fiddlin' the rafters off More than 900 old time music lovers turned the Russell arena into an old-fashioned dance hall in early June when the third annual Ottawa Valley Old Tyme Jamboree was held. Bands were on stage fiddlin' and pickin' continuously from early afternoon to well past midnight. During the day dancing groups delighted everyone with colourful and exciting performances. At night though, the audience took over and danced and sang 'till the wee hours. The annual festival of music is co-sponsored by five area old time music associations including the Russell Old Time Music and Dancing Association and the East and West Osgoode-associations. It'll take the participants a year to recuperate but they'll be ready for next year's festival you can bet. = Former Recreation Director Paul Wylie, former Recreation Director for the Russell area, is now working as the Recreation Director for the City of Barrie. Mr. Wylie had quit his job in Russell a few months ago saying that he was being asked to be simply a facilities manager for the arena and not a recreation director for people in and around the village. Defending the skies. Mr. Hanson is now a qualified Air Defence Technician working at the Canadian Forces Station in Yorkton Saskatchewan. Royal Bank Robber Caught The Ontario Provincial Police have arrested a man in connection with the armed robbery of the Royal Bank in Metcalfe on May 10th. Wayne Nicholas Nevins, 26, formerly of the Morewood area was arrested for the Metcalfe robbery as well as the armed robbery of the M-M Foodliner in Vernon on May 21 and the armed robbery of the Scotia Bank in Osgoode Village on June 4th. He was also arrested for escaping the custody of Joyceville Penitentiary and theft of an auto. The arrest came near Manotick after a month-long investigation. From Covered Wagon to Russell A hundred years ago a young couple named the Do- ble's set off in covered wagons from Michigan to settle in the Dakota's. Once there they didn't waste any time in starting to raise a family and the year after they reach- ed their destination they gave birth to a baby girl. They named her Marjorie Abbott Doble. Last month Marjorie celebrated her 100th birthday in Russell at the home of her daughter and son-in-law Mar- jorie and Christopher Brisson of Mill Street in Russell. And while she didn't have far to go to attend the party in her honour since she's now living at the Dundas Manor in Winchester the people who came to celebrate with her did. The twenty people who came for the party came from New York, Con- necticut, Nantucket as well as Ontario and Quebec. Also at the party was her granddaughter Yolande and her husband Alex Baillon with their children Marc and Kathy who live on Concession Street in Russell. Mar- jorie is part of our living heritage, a reminder of the pioneers and their lives. The Review would like to add its congratulations along with the Queen and the Prime Minister who both sent their well-wishes. Happy Birthday Marjorie. Kathy Kelsey photo Summer fun for Russell By Mary Donnelly This summer you shouldn't hear any children sitting around moaning "There isn't anything to do." Russell has an abundance of programs this year, one of which is the Summer Playground '82. Two talented, energetic leaders have been hired. Mary Hendrix and Michael MacKenzie will work with the children in crafts and out- door games. Both Mary and Mike spent June 21 to 24 at a leadership training program in Perth's Camp . Cameron. They've come back full of ideas and are ready to put them into action. The five week program has been divided into five main themes. Children will enjoy crafts based -- on Animals, Circus, Fantasyland, Indians and Nature. The first forty-five minutes of the day will be spent at activity centres in- doors, followed by a half hour quiet circle time (with juice). The last forty-five minutes children - will enjoy outdoor games or physical activity. Financial support from local community groups has been grati- fying and instrumental in getting the playground going. Donations have been received from Richard's Garage, Lorne Wade, The Lions. |} Club, Tyo's Red & White, Chan- tal Development and the Russell Bogie Benders. St. Joseph's School has offered the use of the kindergarten room and yard for which we are deeply grateful. Russell Public School has agreed to loan us some equipment and teachers there are collecting odds and ends of scrap paper, crayons and supplies.
