Our organization has been in ex- istence for 85 years and although many of our objectives have become more modern, over the years, they still serve the same purpose for which the Women's Institute was founded in 1897. The initial purpose of Women's Institute was to help educate girls in Domestic Science -- this is still one of our main objectives. We supply leaders and financial sup- port for 4-H Groups as well as Senior Workshops on everything from Baking Bread to Interior Decorating. We help women acquire sound and approved homemaking skills -- old and new. Many of our members have developed leader- ship qualities as well as becoming better informed.and more useful citizens. By promoting the use of available resource materials we are able to identify and resolve needs and problems in the community and country. We are proud of the fact that we can celebrate 85 Years of con- tinued success. Here in-Russell we have two active W.I. groups -- Russell Village W.I. who meet every Ist Tuesday of the month and North Russell W.I. who meet every 3rd Tuesday of the month. Visitors are always welcome. A copy of the History of Women's Institute is available at the Russell Public Library and a copy of our Tweedsmuir History (a local History of the Russell Area) is on display in the reference department.
