2 SA December, EL The. Castor tht di. TL mates st sme ~ RisRap by Garey Ris back and might also handle some. Phil Oliver and Joey- Fleming, Russell residents, are two excellent football players. While Russell has many fine athletes such as track stars, hockey players and curlers, it can now boast two local young men playing in the Ontario Midget Football League. Oliver and-Fleming play for the Ottawa Trojans, a team for guys under 18 years old. The Trojans won the Midget championship with a 29-21 victory over the Toronto Steelers Nov. 14° in Oakville. Ottawa competed with teams from Gloucester, Barrie, Burlington, Grimsby, Scar- borough, North York and the Steelers. The Trojans were very suc- cessful during the season, setting numerous offensive and defensive records. They lost only one game all year. Trojans were guests of the City of Ottawa at the dinner for the Ottawa Rough Riders, * Eastern Division champions in the Canadian Football League. Oliver, 15, and Fleming, 17, 'just finished their second year with the Trojans compiling im- pressive statistics. Joey, is an of- fensive lineman for Ottawa- and did a great job making holes for Oliver and- other offensive backfielders to go through. Because of his outstanding ef- forts, he was selected the team's best offensive lineman for 1981. Phil was used primarily as a defensive back, a position where speed is a necessity. He in- tercepted three passes this year, returning one 70 yards for a touchdown. Oliver is also quite a track star according to Chris Fleming, coach of the Russell Warriors. While these are great statistics, the best is yet to come: He averaged 20 yards per carry as a running back and scampered for _ seven touchdowns. He was only used on short yardage situations. Who knows what he would have accomplished had he played the whole season as running back. While Joey ponders about foot- ball and next year, Phil is thinking about playing pro football. "T'll be playing for the Ottawa Sooners next year as a defensive Loral Home Hardware Home & Farm Supplies Russell 445-2171 kickoff returns," he said. Acadia University is interested in him and he's been in contact with head coach John Huard of the Axemen, Canadian college champs in two of the last three seasons. "Tf I'm accepted at university and am successful, I would like to play pro some day," Oliver said. It's nice to see two local lads do- ing well in football. It would be great seeing Joey and Phil in the Canadian Football League. What a boost it would be to the local sports fans, trading trivia ques- tions in a few years about the suc- cess of Oliver and Fleming in pro- fessional sport! ble (presenting trophy), Jim Sullivan (second), Marilyn Sullivan (lead). Some have gone well while others didn't turn out as expected. The corn roast and dance showed a profit of $500. The beef draw showed a $150 profit with the first prize of a side of beef going to Donat Brunet of Casselman. Second and third prize of a quarter beef each went to Roger Peeston of Edwards and Carole Tougas of Russell. The one fund raiser that they would like to forget about was the bingo which was poorly attended and as a result lost $150. This season the Association has a total registration of 119 players, 12 of which are girls coachéd by Don Empey: Coaching the Novice group are John St. Pierre, David Flynn, David Sheldrick, Kevin O'Reilly and Bill Bakker. Don't forget Tuesday night is Minor Hockey night at the Dr. F. Community Centre so come out and root for the home team. Believing in the importance and value of preparation for any form of physical activity, Mrs. Mary Brodhead, a qualified Athletic In- structor, has volunteered her ex- 'pertise and time to conduct pre-ice 'warm-up sessions for all skaters. The weekly sessions throughout the year are geared to teaching skills in preparation for National Skating Tests which enable skaters of all ages to qualify for badges. As well later in' the season preparations will be underway for the annual ice show which this year will take place during Car- nival week. Anyone who has attended this show in the past will agree that it is one of the best in the area and always plays to a packed house. The Club Executive has been busy for some time with fund rais- ing events. These have included a Club Craft booth at the Metcalfe Fair, bake sale and raffle tickets to mention a few. The profits realized help im- mensely in keeping registration costs to each skater to a minimum but it does keep the Executive and club members busy. Apart from raising money it also helps in creating and maintaining club in- terest.
