of 10 The Castor Review, December, 1981 Warriors fade in final frame by Garey Ris A third period barrage of penalties and lack of discipline cost the Russell Warriors again as the Limoges Royals roared back from a 5-2 deficit to steal a 6-5 vic- tory in Intermediate hockey at the Dr. Frank Kinnaird Community Centre. "'We just fell apart," said Kirk Rothenberger of the Warriors ef- fort in the third period. "We didn't play good enough to win."' Kenny Sullivan, who was held ~ scoreless for the first time in the four games he's played, said: "Too many mental mistakes resulted in penalties which hurt usc' ; QUESTIONS OFFICIATING Russell playing-coach Doug Harten didn't like the calls against his team, especially the infractions for body contact. "*The referees were calling body contact but also let some body contact go."' With the Warriors leading 5-2 and in control of the game, play began to get rough and Russell took some needless penalties. The Royals were presented a golden opportunity to narrow the gap when Kirk Rothenberger was called for tripping and Leo Achtereeke -for unsportsmanlike conduct at 3:54 of the third period. Robert Leduc split the Russell defence and sent a shot past Russell goalie Dwayne Lowe at 5:12. Seventeen seconds later and a one man advantage, Denis Gibeault scored to make it 5-4. NOT FINISHED _ The Warriors weren't through taking dumb penalties. A tripping penalty at 8:19 put Russell back in trouble. The Royals' Denis Lamadeline scored on the power play to set the stage for the finish. Denis Gibeault capped off the wild comeback when he scored with at 18:32 as the Warriors con- tinued their abysmal season. Wayne Warnock, Gaetan Forgues, Fred Young, Paul Boland and Rothenberger scored singles for the Warriors. Richard Ayotte notched two goals to ' round out the Royals scoring. Minor hockey busy by Garey Ris Atom A Warriors Ted Johnson scored two goals and Chislain Trudel added one to pace Metcalfe and District to a narrow 3-2 win over the Atom Warriors. Derek Clost and James Paulus replied for Russell. Trudel fired a pair of goals in aiding Met- calfe to another. victory _ over Russell by a 2-1 margin. Paulus scored Russell's lone goal. Peewee A Warriors Bruce Higgins notched a pair of goals and Steven Demers got the shutout as Metcalfe bombed Russell 9-0. Winchester also beat Russell in an earlier encounter by a 9-0 tally. Rod Casselman led the way with three goals. Tripped up on the play -- but successful nevertheless -- was Paul Cochrane, forward for the Russel War- riors, who tucked the puck into the net to score against the Casselman Eagles. All in vain, however, because the Eagles came back to beat the home-town Warriors 8-7. Bantam A Warriors Brett. Middlemiss and Ron Geerts scored late in'the third period to power Russell to a 5-3 triumph over the visiting Metcalfe and District Mustangs. Barry McVey, Brian Carscadden and Trevor Storring. scored singles. Metcalfe avenged the loss two nights later when Dave Warren scored twice to lead Metcalfe to a 4-2 win. Middlemiss scored both Russell goals. Midget A Warriors Robert Clark scored what prov- ed to-be the winner at 12:50 of the first period as the Warriors Ramblings _ Tough play in ladies hockey by Jack McLaren It was news to me to learn couple of weeks ago that Russell now sports a girls or perhaps I should say a ladies hockey team. A few years back attempts were made at organizing a girls ringette team but lack of interest on the part of the girls soon discouraged the people promoting the sport and it fell by the wayside. I doubt if that will happen to the hockey team with Mr. En- thusiasm himself, Don Empey at the helm. To find out more about his new venture I talked to him a few nights back and despite the teams lack of experience he is very encouraged by its enthusiasm for the game. He pointed out that the team is part of the Russell Minor Hockey Association and therefore are call- ed the Russell Warriors or is it Warriorettes? Assisting Don with the coaching is Paul Cochrane and Scott Young. The team has just received new sweaters thanks to sponsors McDonald Construction and Novelair Ltd. of Ottawa. In this their first year of opera- tion, the team is entered in the well-established COMEK. league with Metcalfe, Osgoode, Kemp- tville and Embrun. Competition is very tough and scoring even one goal against some of the teams is reason for celebration. But experience is be- ing gained and Don points out that the Russell team which averages 14 years per player is easily the youngest team in the. . léague. Many of the other teams Pee ee ewwee cer ee even eeeenne are going with 16-18 year olds on- ly. The youngest member is Dawn Empey as the ripe old age of 12. The organizers had hoped that a few more girls would have come out and played on the team which is presently down to 10 players. The high cost of equipment may have changed the minds of some but organizers are hoping that once established, the team will pick up additional players next season. Team members are Tammy Groves (goalie), Angel Groves, 4 Tracey Meade, Kim Addler, Kor- rina Eggum, Raye Simpson, Jen- ny Freda, France Perras, Annette Therkelsen and Dawn Empey. Despite suffering early losses, team enthusiasm is high and a lot . Of patience will be needed against the more experienced teams. A successful season need: not necessarily be measured in the number of wins or/osses. The team is young and all the 'fold veterans" will be returning next season.
