Jets Taking Shape The Metcalfe Jets management promises a lot of new faces when the team hits the ice for their opening game in Morrisburg against the Lions on Oct. 19he4e same Lions will engage the Jets in the Jets home opener on Nov. 2. Coach Bob Gendron has returned for another season and early in- dications are that his. team will have plenty of speed up front. The team has been practising at the Russell arena but hopes to return to home ice by mid-October. Loral Home 'Hardware 'Home & Farm Supplies Russell 445-2191 Returning from last year are Rick Nesseth, high-scoring Thom Racine, Jim Cochrane, Bruce Ker- foot and Mike Doyle. Newcomers include Tim Oshier, Danny Stoker and Kevin McManus. The defence corps will be led by Greg McLaren. Other defence positions are wide open but midget age Tim Cavan has impressed to date and will probably see a lot of action along the blue line. Goaltending will be solid with the return of Robbie Burns who will be backed up probably, by Bill Jamieson. Team President Bill Wammes and Manager Bev Skillen promise this year's team will provide an exciting brand of hockey and are looking forward to increased fan support this season. The Longpre-Burgess ladies team had the best overall score on the second leg, disgracing the more experienced Longre-Burgess gents who failed to finish. Early favorites, Gerry OReilly and son, spent an enjoyable afternoon touring the countryside, looking for mystical lost turn. A roadside ditch proved an irresistible attrac- tion for one team who later blam- ed their brief off-road adventure on ambiguous rally instructions. It was also my first ' time outside Ontario or Quebec. The flight to Edmonton went smoothly and I met my brother Bob at the airport. CP Air sent my luggage on to Vancouver. Four days later, I picked it up at the Red Deer bus terminal with everything in- tact. While in Sunny Alberta, I took in a football game at Calgary's McMahon Stadium where the Stampeders were entertaining the B.C. Lions. Brothers Richard and Bob enjoyed the game as the Stamps came from behind to win. The weather wasn't the best. Most days were overcast but warm. I stayed at my brother and sister-in-law's house in Delburne, 45 km from Red Deer. The village of Delburne has a population of 425 and has two banks, three gas stations, two restaurants, an arcade, post office and a hotel. The scenery is beautiful with lot's of trees, hills and farmland. Red Deer has a population of 41,273 and is expanding rapidly. The roads are awful, are being dug up all the time. I renamed it Dust Ci- ty. My final two days were spent in Jasper, in the Canadian Rockies with my sister Trudy and her friend Alice. We went on to the Japser Skytrain and had breakfast on top of the mountain. We saw a moun- tain goat, moose and deer. Sport, travel, good companionship -- A fine mix, that! New Fastball Champs Blossom Park captured the championship of the South Carleton Fastball League by defeating Embrun in the best-of-seven final four games to two. The team had defeated Kenmore in the quarter-finals and were awarded the semi-final series against the Russell A's by default. In league play, the A's had finished in first place and Embrun in second. In the final game Blossom Park defeated Embrun 7-0 with pitcher Bob Widenmaier throwing a no-hitter. By winning the series, they were presented with the much-coveted John Bracken Trophy, efnblematic of South-Carleton final supremacy. The Russell As, by virtue of their first place'finish, captured the Lyttle Trophy. A. SS.
